Seventeen

"I'm all for winging it, but this is crazy, man. We got mercenaries with some real heat on us. I mean, I ain't scared or nothing, but, man, I don't even have a gun." Roman said.

"Gun?" Dom asked. "We got a whole city."

"And we may have more than that. If they use God's Eye, it'll tap cameras around town to find our location, which means we could plant a virus." Tej suggested.

"And then break in when the access it." Ramsey finished. "So you're talking about hacking my hacking device. It's brilliant."

"Yeah but there's one problem. The signal strength. We can't start a hack on them until they're within a two-mile range." Tej said.

"That's really close." Letty replied.

"Close?" Roman asked. "These guys are military. If they're within two miles of us, we're already dead. I don't know about y'all, but I didn't really plan on dying today."

"Only one way to stay alive." Brian replied. "We play keep-away with Ramsey."

"What?" She asked.

"They can't hit us if we keep moving." Brian answered.

"And I'll take Shaw." Dom said.

"So basically, we're just gearing up for a big game of hot potato, huh?" Tej asked.

"Basically." Rae answered. Tej's gaze lingered on Rae.

"Which car is the potato?" Ramsey asked.

"Girl, you're the potato." Roman answered.

"Tej, you got a citywide on that scanner?" Brian asked.

"Brian, let me tell you something. Don't ever doubt your boy." Tej answered. "This is me you're talking to."

"What's your natural hair color?" Roman asked Rae suddenly.

"Red." She answered. "Why?"

"I feel like I barely know you." Roman replied.

"That's because you barely know her." Brian said.

Regan smiled.

They drove in a straight line, Brian in front, followed by Roman and Tej then Letty and Regan/

Guys, they're here. Tej announced.

"How many cars?" Letty asked.

None. That's the problem.

"You're fucking joking." Rae replied.

Okay, let's give them the tour. Break on my mark. Brian said. Three, two, one...Go!

Letty and Regan went right, Roman and Tej left.

Ramsey, start the hack. Tej ordered.

They drove around, waiting.

Football's hot. I need to lateral. Rome, where are you? Brian asked.

Running back, charging in!

Regan leaned forward, placing her between the front seat chairs.

"This is exciting." She said to Letty.

Meet me on Third and Spring. Brian told Roman.

You got it.

"Very." Letty replied.

Brian, they took out the tower. Tej said.

"Wait, then that means we're fucked." Regan replied.

I'm seeing half a dozen cell towers between Sixth and State. Brian, if you can get to the top of nay one of those buildings around there, we can remote the signal manually and finish the job. Tej said.

I'm on it! Brian replied.

Letty, the football's on fire. We need help! Roman called.

"Hang on, we're coming." Letty replied.

She drove out of the tunnel, straight for them.

Letty stopped under the bridge, the boys getting Ramsey into the car.

"Let's go, let's go!" Letty called.

Gotta get outta here. It's on your trail and it's coming fast. Roman said.

"Got it." Letty replied.

"So if this car goes down, who's coming to save us?" Ramsey asked.

Letty laughed. "Save us, honey? We're it."

"Plus, 'save us'?" Rae asked. "Come on."

Letty laughed, looking back at Regan.

"It's coming back." Ramsey announced.

"We'll lose them in the tunnel." Letty replied.

They fired, the back end of the car going up. Ramsey screamed as Regan pushed against the seats in front of her to keep from flying forward. The car went back down, Letty speeding forward. They went straight into a wall, bouncing off of it and continuing on. There were bullets being shot at them, breaking out the back windshield. Regan ducked.

"I can't shake this thing." Letty said.

They drove out of the tunnel, an ambulance driving off the side of the road, taking down the missile. Letty hit the brakes, skidding to a stop. They watched the ambulance.

Hobbs pushed the windshield out, stepping out of the car.

"No way." Letty muttered.

Hobbs walked over to the drone, shooting it off.

"Hey, did you bring the cavalry?" Letty asked.

"Woman, I am the cavalry." Hobbs replied, lifting the gun from the drone.

"Of course you are." Letty smiled.

"Who is that?" Ramsey asked.

"That's Hobbs." Letty answered.

"An old friend." Regan added.

"Brian did it. We're back in." Ramsey announced. "We've got God's Eye back."

Letty raced down the street. As they went, a car beside them blew up. Their car went straight into another, the girls all screaming as the fell forward.

"Duck!" Letty screamed as bullets rained on the hood. "I need some help over here. We're getting nailed! I need some back up!"

Regan's breath caught in her throat as the garage was stricken.

They watched the parking garage crumble, Dom's car shooting out at the last minute. The three climbed out of the car as he missed the helicopter, going down. They watched the car crash back into the garage.

"Dom!" Letty yelled. The car kept rolling down the breakage. Regan slammed the car door shut, running after Letty.

She looked up, hearing the helicopter blow. When they got to the car, Hobbs was already moving away breakage. Brian moved to help him. Letty and Regan went around each of the guys, trying to see him.

"Is he breathing?" Letty asked.

"What I want you to do- keep his head tilted up. All right? Keep it back like this. Pinch his nose, keep his head tilted, breathe into him now, go!" Brian ordered her.

Regan was panicking as she watched. Letty's eyes filled with tears as she breathed into him.

"Yeah, good. Come on, Dom!" Brian said. "Come on, God damn it. You come on! You breathe! Go, go, breathe! Come on, damn it. Let's go."

Regan felt a set of hands pull her up. She crashed into Tej's chest, crying as she listened to Brian.

"Come on, Dom, I need you to breathe. Come on! Come on, Dom!"

"Oh, my God." Letty cried.

"Come on, buddy. Dom, come on! Come on!"

"Stop it." Letty cried. "Back off!"

"Will you stop?" Brian screamed at Letty. "Breathe into him! Pinch his nose."

"Get off of him!"

Letty and Brian kept screaming at each other. Regan pressed into Tej a little harder.

"Dom, baby, I know you're hurting right now, but I want you to listen. Stay awake and focus on me." Letty said when she'd gotten Brian off.

"I'll take her." Brian said. Tej released Regan, handing her over to her brother. Brian held onto his sister as she cried.

"I remember everything." Letty admitted. "It came to me like a flood. I remember that night in the Dominican Republic. The night we got married. If you die, I die. And I'm not ready to leave this place yet. This moment is still ours. I remember everything. I remember it all."

"It's about time." Dom replied.

The laugh that broke through Letty was what made Brian finally release Rae. He kissed her forehead, smiling up at Roman.

"Why didn't you tell me we were married?" Letty asked.

"Becuase you can't tell someone they love you." Dom answered.

Regan looked at Tej.

"Holy shit." Brian muttered, making his way to Dom. Regan followed pushing her previous thought out of her head.

"Daddy, come play!" Mia called from the water.

"Yeah." Brian replied. Jack came running over into Brian. "Yeah, buddy."

"Duty calls." Dom said.

"Yeah, it does." Bri replied. "Let's get mama."

Brian ran with jack out to Mia. He lifted Jack into the air, smiling.

"That's where he belongs." Letty said.

"Home." Dom replied. "Where he's always belonged."

"Things are gonna be different now." Roman said. They all smiled.

Dom stood, walking away.

"You aren't going to say goodbye?" Ramsey asked.

"It's never good bye." Dom answered.

"We'll see you later, Dom." Regan smiled.

I used to say I lived my life a quarter mile at a time and I think that's why we were brothers. Because you did, too. No matter where you are, whether it's a quarter mile away or halfway across the world...You'll always be with me. And you'll always be my brother.
