Chapter 59 - Gambit

[July of 2012]

[Underground Tunnels]

3rd PoV

"Quick!" Callisto urged as she and the young Morlocks continued running through the dark tunnels.

*Swoosh*

*Bam!*

Harpoon once again threw an energy projectile to the running Morlocks. Callisto once again showed a good reaction speed and reflexes as she pulled another Morlocks away from being pierced by the weapon construct.

*Crunch*

Blockbuster crouched down and pierced both his hands to the ground. With a slight grunt, he pulled a large chunk of solid cement from the ground and stood up with a big grin on his face.

*Swoosh*

*Bang!*

He then aimed and threw the large chunk of stone at the disappearing group of Callisto as the stone whipped through the smashed the wall — hairs breadth away from touching Callisto.

The whole tunnel that they were in shook from the force of Blockbuster's attack as Callisto and the others brought their hands to cover their heads in an attempt to protect themselves.

The Morlocks eventually stopped as they looked in front of them. They were currently seeing three dark tunnel ways that they weren't really familiar with.

Even though they are very familiar to the tunnels they live in, they still haven't covered the whole of it as its edge even reached up to New Jersey and Connecticut.

*Tap Tap*

The sounds of footsteps snapped them out of their reverie as the younger Morlocks turned to their leader, Callisto, waiting for her decision.

"This way." Callisto eventually made a decision as she and the young Morlocks quickly hurried to enter the one on the right.

..

..

Arclight and her group eventually also stopped in front of the tunnels. But Scalphunter continued walking as he can already sense where the Morlocks had gone using his meta ability.

They then went along and continued walking with relaxed pace.

—-—

In another side of the tunnels.

The rest of the Morlocks were currently all gathered in the same underground tunnels. But the tunnel were different this time as its ceiling reached up to fifty feet and the whole place has a relatively big space and was able to accommodate the whole of Morlocks with ease.

Currently. They were all looking at a smiling man. The man has a unique get up as he was wearing fingerless gloves with silver wristlets, silver boots and was also wearing a brown trench coat. He also wears a cowl that extends underneath his clothes.

Remy LeBeau aka Gambit was smiling as he talked relaxedly to the younger Morlocks who responded to him with smiles on their otherwise deformed faces.

"Yes, if you all come with me, I can promise you that my boss will treat you well and he even wants to restore your appearances just so you can go back to the society and be normal again." Gambit answered one of the kids who asked.

""Really?"" The young Morlocks all had their eyes sparkling as they began imagining the world where they are normal looking and they can walk through the surface like normal people.

They imagined themselves playing with other normal kids and also being able to buy things that they want like those food called ice creams that they would sometimes see from the kids in the surface.

The kids all then turned to their respective parents and quickly ran to their sides. They looked up at them and asked with sparkly eyes. ""Can we all go with him?""

The Morlock parents looked down at their kids and stroked their heads with sadness and resolute in their eyes "Don't believe anything that guy says. There's no one in the surface that would accept us and that is a fact."

The parents then turned to Gambit and said with anger "Don't mix any unnecessary ideas within our children's mind."

They then turned to each other and asked "Where is our leader? She should be here to drive this man away."

As if on cue. Footsteps resounded as the the Morlocks and Gambit turned their heads to the direction where the sound came.

An exhausted looking kids and Callisto revealed themselves as they run inside the space of the tunnels that the Morlocks and Gambit was occupying.

"Run! We need to run!" Callisto shouted to the Morlocks as she saw them from afar.

The Morlocks had confused expression as they heard her as Callisto and her group eventually made it in front of the other group of Morlocks.

"Quick! We need to get out of here! A group of mutants infiltrated the tunnels and immediately attacked us after seeing us. So be fast! We need to get awa–" Callisto explained but wasn't able to finish her words as her eyes inevitably spotted the stunned-looking Gambit at the side.

*!!*

She quickly reached and pulled the kids behind her as an attempt to protect them. She then took a stance and pulled two daggers from her side as she eyed Gambit. "Who are you."

Then the three silent Morlocks at the side, who haven't spoken and only observed Gambit the whole time, stood up as one of them quickly walked beside Callisto.

"What's the problem, leader?" Mark Hallett aka Sunder asked with seriousness in his voice as he clenched his hands while looking at Gambit.

Sunder is a large man that stood at a solid 7'1 and also sported a bald head. He wears tattered green sleeveless military vest with yellow shirt underneath, which was also tattered, coupled with blue tattered pants.

Sunder is a close friend of Callisto and was one of his most trusted, second to Caliban, who was one of the three Morlock that observed Gambit.

*Tap, Tap*

Footsteps resounded once again as they all turned their heads to the entrance with Callisto having her eyes slowly widening at every second that passed.

"We're the problem." Arclight condescendingly spoke as she and the other Marauders revealed themselves, stepping foot inside the safe space of the Morlocks.

"Guys." Gambit said confusedly as he saw his other teammates.

He was confused by how arrogant and dangerous was the mercenaries was looking as a bad feeling emerged in bus heart.

"Hm?" Scalphunter turned to Gambit as he raised an eyebrow. He then asked with a curious face "Why haven't you killed them yet?"

"What." Gambit was utterly confused by that words as his eyes eventually widened in realization.

He was tricked.

The reason for him being him was he was just trying to pay off his debt to the guy named Nathaniel Essex. Nathaniel said that all his debt will be payed off if he do one last order for the last time.

Nathaniel then first instructed him to recruit a few mercenaries to help him on his mission. He then stated to him personally that he just need to recruit a community of outcast mutants that live off on the sewers and make them all agree to relocate to another place that Nathaniel provided just for them to have better lives.

Remy asked why is there a need for mercenaries but Essex just stated that they are just needed incase something happened.

But now, He now realized why the mercenaries were truly needed.

To exterminate the Morlocks.

Unknown to Gambit. The reason that Essex went out of his way just to make Remy believe all he was made to believe was just to satisfy his sadistic tendencies as he liked to see people realizing horrible things when its already too late.

*Swoosh!*

Gambit's train of thought was interrupted by a whooshing sound and then he saw a projectile coming for his head.

!!

He was startled but he still managed to react – displaying an enhanced level of reaction – as he leaned back and easily performed a back flip — evading the projectile in the process.

The moment he landed, he quickly jumped to roll at the side as another projectile aimed for his chest.

*Bam*

Seeing his attacks being easily evaded. Harpoon turned to his teammates as they all grinned in unison. ""Let's do this.""

Callisto – who realized that Gambit wasn't on the enemies' side – turned to Sunder and spoke "You got the bald muscly guy, okay?"

Sunder nodded in agreement as he turned back to the now-approaching Marauders as he punched his palms in confidence. "Bring it on!"

Callisto then jogged and approached Gambit as she asked with her daggers ready "Are you on our side?"

Gambit stood up from his rolled position n and patted off the dust on his trench coat and replied angrily "You damn right I am."

He then pulled a playing card from his sleeve and held it between his fingers. He then started walking forward – passing by Callisto – as he shouted to the approaching Marauders "You bunch of smelly mercenaries can go kiss my ass before reporting to your pale boss!"

*Swoosh!*

After saying his piece. Gambit then threw the playing card at the approaching Marauders and watched as Harpoon once again conjured another of his harpoon-shaped energy projectiles and threw it to the card.

The two attacks met in the air and the card was quickly triggered as it fiercely exploded.

*Bang!*

The small shockwave that the explosion made quickly spreads and made the two sides take a serious stance as they know that the real battle begins right now.

...

On the other hand. Andrew watched patiently from the sides as he waited for the right time to act.
