Chapter 4: A Night Out

"So how was your day? Any more wins out there today?" a young man waved to Luna as she entered the Pokemon Center, the sunset behind her gave off a bright glow through her light brown hair. 

  "Huh?" Luna was taken by surprise as she squinted at the young man, trying to adjust to the light. "Ted, is that you?" she perked up and walked over to the table he was seated at.

  "Yeah, it's me. I hope you had better luck than I did!" his voice was a mix of laughter and sadness.

  "What do you mean? I sorta' went "Beach Mode" after our Pokemon battle this morning. You were out there battling all day?" 

  "O-oh! You weren't even training out there? I thought you'd be prepping to battle Gym Leader Pisces."

  "Hehe! S-sure, I totally have been training!" She scratched the back of her head.

  "You haven't trained at all, have you?" Theodore saw through her lie blankly.

  "Y-Yeah, no..."

  Ted sighed, "Alright then, starting tomorrow, why don't we join forces and train together?"

  Luna jumped happily, "Yes! That sounds great! Thank you so much, Teddy!"

  He froze at the sight of the abruptly cheerful girl in front of him, "D-Don't get too excited! I'm not that great of a Pokemon Trainer... Yet!"

  "We'll do great! I'll meet you out here tomorrow morning then?"

  "Sounds good to me!"

  The two young adults went their separate ways for the night. Luna crashed on her bed and got into her pajamas after she got back to her room. In the mood for some cuddle buddies, she released Casper and Slither from their Pokeballs.

  The next morning, Luna made sure to wake up nice and early to meet up with her new acquaintance. 

  "Luna, over here!" Ted shouted across the lobby as he hurried towards Luna.

  "Morning!" Luna greeted him in her usual jolly manner.

  "Let's get started then!" Theodore led Luna out of the Pokemon Center to a large park nearby. 

  Large grassy fields and rows of large oak trees surrounded the park, feeling like a forest in the middle of the city. Trainers and regular City-goers filled the park as they went about their daily activities. Some trainers were battling while others were setting up food for their Pokemon to eat. Other people were soaking in the views of the park and watching the exciting Pokemon battles nearby.

  "This is so awesome! There was nothing like this in my hometown!" Luna had sparkles in her eyes as she gazed out around her.

  "R-Really? This is pretty normal for things around here." Ted smiled awkwardly.

  "That's great! I could never get tired of this! These are my people! Our people, Ted!" Luna wrapped her arm around him and sent her other hand forward as if showing him a new world. 

  Ted's face burned red and coughed, squirming out of her grasp, "Anyways! L-let's go meet some other trainers to see if we can battle!" 

  Luna and Ted then headed towards a group of two trainers that looked like they were hanging around.

  "Hellooo!" Luna clamored as she approached the trainers, an embarrassed Theodore hid his face as he followed closely behind.

  "H-Hi!" said the female trainer with long green hair, she wore marked-up jeans and a short-sleeved jean jacket.

  "Sup'?" said the male trainer with cargo pants and a black tank top. 

  "I'm Luna and this is Ted! We were looking for some sparing partners and were wondering if you'd like to have a Pokemon Battle with us?"

  The two Pokemon trainers looked at each other before looking back at Luna and the visibly shaking Theodore, "Sure, why not? We're down!"

  The four trainers got into position on the grassy field as they prepared to send out their Pokemon in a "2v2" battle. Ted looked nervous as sweat trickled from his forehead, "H-Hey Luna, are you sure about this?"

  Luna smiled with Pokeball in hand, "What are you so worried about? We got this!" Luna squinted with a fiery look in her eyes as she threw her Pokeball forward.

  Ten minutes later both Luna and Theodore sat exhausted on a bench on the park path. 

  "We did NOT have that." Luna clamored, completely defeated.

  "I tried to tell you..." 

  "I'm never sending that Salandit out to battle ever again!"

  "Y-Yeah, it didn't really listen to a thing you said."

  Luna stood up frustrated as she released Slither from its Pokeball. The Pokemon appeared from the bright red glow and stood staring blankly at the empty space around him. Slither seemed a little banged up, but unbothered with his injuries.

  Theodore tilted his head, "Are you sure that he's... 'All There'?"

  Luna looked down at the Pokemon unemotionally, "I really have no clue." She then knelt next to him, "Slither?"

  The Salandit seemed to respond to its name as it turned to face her; its tongue hung from its mouth derpily. 

  She sighed, "Okay, why didn't you do anything out there on the field? You didn't even dodge any attacks!" 

  Slither looked up at her confused as it tilted its head fully sideways. 

  "Oookay..." Luna seemed a bit creeped out.

  Ted cleared his throat, "Well you were telling him to use flamethrower. When did you teach him how to use that attack?"

  "Teach him? He's a fire type aren't they born knowing fire attacks?"

  Theodore facepalmed as he quickly realized that Luna and Slither were one in the same, "You both have no clue what you're doing."

  "H-Hey, it worked with Casper yesterday when we battled!" Luna felt insulted being put in the same boat as her strange Salandit.

  "Y-You just guessed his attacks!? And it worked!?" Ted was baffled at what he was hearing as he whimpered to himself, "I lost a battle to her??"

  "Yes, you did! And you promised that you were gonna train with me! So help me out here! Please!" she punched his shoulder playfully.

  Ted was actually lost for words for a moment before he responded, "Alright, follow me."

Luna quickly scooped up her lizard and ran after a pacing Ted, "Wait up!"

  After a half-hour trek, the two ended up back at the Pokemon Center.

  "W-why are we back here?" asked a puzzled Luna.

  "We are checking the moves that your Pokemon know, dummy."

  "O-oh... And we can do that here?" Luna asked squeamishly, a bit embarrassed that she was so unsure.

  Theodore stopped as they entered inside of the Pokemon Center, "Luna, I can tell that you are a good person, but..." Ted breathed in, "How did you leave home to become a Pokemon Trainer without knowing the simplest thing about being a Trainer!?"

  Luna put her hand on Ted's shoulder and spoke plainly, "I never paid attention during Pokemon Training Classes."

  "W-what were you doing the whole time you were in class?"

  "Daydreaming about being a Trainer."

  Theodore pinched the bridge of his nose, "Let's get this over with..."

  He took her over to a row of PCs that laid the back right wall of the Pokemon Center. 

  He reached out his palm flatly, "May I see your Pokemon?"

  "Sure!" she handed him their respective Pokeballs.

  Theodore placed the two Pokeballs in slots that seemed to be specifically fitted for Pokeballs. Suddenly on the PC's screen in front of them, the biological data of Luna's Pokemon appeared on the screen. 

  "Well, they're both healthy at the very least." Ted said as he read the screen, "You're Togetic knows Arial Ace, Fairy Wind, and Charm. Your Salandit knows Ember and Scratch."

  "So cool! I had no clue you could look things up like this!" Luna scanned every detail she could about her Pokemon as she read the screen, "Huh, Casper feels so much heavier than seven pounds when he sits on my head."

  Ted sighed, "Alright, now that we know what they can do, let's get back out there and try again!"

  "Right!" Luna shouted happily as she raised her fist to the air.

The sun was setting by the time the two had returned to the Pokemon Center from a day of successful training at the park.

  "You did great out there after you learned what your Salandit was capable of!" Ted complemented the sweaty Luna as she embraced the sweet cold air conditioning the Pokemon Center provided as they made their way inside.

  "Thanks, Teddy!" Luna smiled softly.

  "H-hey, I was wondering if you would want to hang out later tonight?" Ted's face was bright red, barely able to get the question out straight.

  "That sounds fun, what did you have in mind?" Luna replied in a friendly manner.

  "I-I kinda wanted to explore downtown if that was okay with you!"

  "Great! I'll get changed and meet you down here in twenty minutes?"

  "Y-yeah, that's perfect!" Ted's voice hit a high pitch.

  "Cool, see you in a bit!" Luna nodded and hurried upstairs, excited to see more of the city.

  Twenty minutes later Luna made her way downstairs in a pair wearing a pair of tight-fitting jeans and a flowery T-shirt. Ted sat at the table seemingly playing with his thumbs nervously. 

  "You ready to head out!?" Luna jumped at the occupied Ted,

  He jumped in his seat and looked a bit frightened before he realized it was Luna who had scared him, "Y-yeah, let's go." His attitude changed a bit as he put on a smile. 

  Luna was happy she was making her first Pokemon Trainer Friend on her journey, she began to half-skip along her way towards downtown. 

  To both Luna and Theodore's surprise, the nightlife of the city was even more crowded than the daytime hours.

  "I've never seen so many people in one place before!" Luna was amazed, peeking down the busy street that was lit by many neon lights from the many stores and clubs affixed to the buildings.

  "Really? AcornWall must have been a seriously small town." Ted spoke aloud while thinking how many things were completely new to her.

  "Yeah, it was! Speaking of hometowns, where did you grow up?" she asked curiously.

  "Me? Well, I was born in Sinnoh, but my parents moved to Retro City here in the Lexon Region when I was only two." 

  "Woah, so you grew up in the biggest city in the Region!? No wonder, you're so good with crowds!"

  Inside were rows of colorful outfits that Luna was desperate to try on. But after looking at the hefty prices of the clothes she quickly grew disinterested. 

  "Why'd they have to be so expensive!?" Luna grumbled as they got back out to the street.

  "It's a tourist trap! You gotta be careful where you buy stuff in the cities, they overprice everything they can get their hands on."

  Luna scrunched her face, "Alright then Slick! You're used to big cities! Find us a good cheap place to get food!"

  "Geez you're quick to throw out demands for a third-rate trainer!" he laughed.

  "Hey!" Luna punched him in the shoulder, "Don't forget who lost to this third-rate trainer!"

  "Alright, alright." Ted smiled, "Let's go down this street. 'The fewer lights, the better the food!'" Ted led Luna down a less lively street in search of good food.

  "Is that quote really true?" Luna asked puzzled.

  "I dunno'!" Ted shrugged his shoulder, "Heard it from a homeless guy."

  Luna stared at him, visibly disappointed. 

  "W-what? It's a good quote!" A small vendor caught his eye and he pointed, "Look, they're selling Rice Buns over there!" 

  Luna smiled and rolled her eyes playfully, "I guess it is a good quote..." 

  The two young adults walked up and ordered their Rice Buns. Luna was getting desperate for her meal as her stomach began to rumble. Within a few minutes, the two had Rice Buns in hand and decided to walk further down the street.

  "So what made you want to become a trainer, Luna?" asked Ted, with a mouthful of food.

  Luna swallowed before answering, "You know... I actually did try to become a Pokemon Trainer when I was younger. When I was twelve to be exact; and the reason back then was just because I thought Pokemon were super cool and it just seemed like a dream job, y'know? But this time around my reason was a bit different. I want to see the world; there is just so much out there to experience and live through!"

  Theodore seemed genuinely surprised at her answer and a little taken aback, "That was honestly a good answer." 

  Luna stuck out her tongue, "Like I don't give good answers!"

  Ted chuckled, "Oh, not to pry but, what made you stop becoming a Trainer when you were younger?"

  Luna scratched her head, "O-oh, well... I didn't even really start to begin with."

  Ted tilted his head as he dug into his Rice Bun. "Watchyoo meen?" he spoke with a full mouth.

  Luna sighed and seemed to be a bit reluctant to speak at first, "You know how when you start off, you're supposed to go to your local professor to get your Pokemon to begin your journey?"

  "Yeah?" Ted gulped down his food.

  "AcornWall didn't have a professor when I was younger and we didn't get one in town until I was already sixteen. A-Anyways, up until then all the Pokemon Trainers from my town would take a day's travel through our western route towards BoulderCreek Village."

  "Your parents didn't make you travel there on your own without a Pokemon, did they!?" Ted looked worried.

  "No, of course not!" Luna shook her hands in front of her, "B-but I sorta' snuck off on my own the day before we were supposed to leave..."

  "Holy crap, Luna..."

  "Yeah, yeah... I know... It was the dumbest thing I've ever done in my life." Luna paused and cleared her throat, "I thought I was invincible back then, I'd climb every tree I saw and chase after wild Pokemon three times my size!" she laughed before going a bit quiet, "But when I was out there on my own, it got really foggy. And I heard this growl, this deep growl. I-It was like I felt it throughout my entire body... Then I saw it."

  "S-Saw what?" 

  "This Pokemon. This.. Thing. It towered over me so much, I thought it was a tree at first, but I remember those deep dark eyes... And its fangs. Its mouth looked like it was filled with daggers. I was so scared of it, I just ran and ran, then I hid underneath a rotted-out tree trunk for what felt like forever."

  Ted put his hand on her shoulder firmly to try and drag her out from her hurtful memories. Luna's solemn face slowly changed to her usual cheery self as she felt his soft grip.

  "I'm sorry you went through that, Luna. I didn't mean to bring up such horrible memories." 

  "It's alright. It's in the past now! I've never been one to dwell on things, haha! What about you? Why did you become a Pokemon Trainer."

  Luna covered her mouth, pulling back her laughter deep down, "Mhmm!"

  Ted seemed to be fond of the memory, "Ever since, I've been working hard at becoming a Pokemon Trainer! I even got my Wismur to evolve a couple of months ago too!"

The two walked a bit further until they realized they were in a dimly lit street.

  "I guess we walked a bit too far." Luna looked around at the flickering street lights and boarded-up windows around them.

  "Y-Yeah, I guess we did." Ted noticed a small group of men and women in flashy dresses and suits walking towards a building with a bouncer out front, "Hey, let's go see if they know how to get back!"

  "Yeah, sounds good!" Luna followed him closely, "That's weird..." she said as she got closer to the group, all of the members of the fancy-looking group wore black and white masquerade masks. 

  "H-hello!" Ted walked up with Luna as the group was being allowed inside, the bouncer turned towards Ted and Luna, revealing that he was also wearing a mask.

  Ted seemed to freeze in place, becoming uncomfortable extremely fast.

  Luna on the other hand... "Hello there!" she said with a jolly and friendly tone, "Do we need to be dressed up to enter, and do we need masks too!?"

  The bounder turned to Luna, "No dress code is required to enter the club and masks will be provided upon entry."

  "Forty." replied the masked bouncer as he extended his hand as well.

  "Deal!" Luna shouted as she shook his hand.

  Ted stood in complete shock with his jaw dropped at his strange friend.

  Luna then handed the bouncer the money and he bowed elegantly as he showed her in. Ted began to follow but was stopped by the bouncer.

  "Fifty bucks." The bouncer told him grimly.

  "B-but she paid forty!"

  "That's because I liked her. I don't like you. Fifty Bucks."

  While the outside of the building may have looked dirty and abandoned the inside looked straight out of a Five Star Hotel. Black and white checkered floors were glossy like new.   "Oh, thank you!" Luna smiled as she gleefully put on her mask. The woman nodded kindly in reply.

  She punched Ted softly in the ribs, "See! This place is pretty classy!"

  "I-I don't know Luna, fancy clubs aren't usually hidden away like this.." A nervous Ted put on his mask. 

  The woman lowered her head and held the door open for Luna and Ted to enter. 

  Luna, bright-eyed, hurried inside as Ted sped up to catch up to her.

  Luna gasped at the beautiful and stylish oak wood bar to the left and the extravagant seating next to a stage set up with a voluptuous woman singing into the microphone in the back of the club.
