This month was the last one for the Disaster Relief Phase, which meant I was just a month away from starting my final phase. Once I had gone through the 6 month long Ranger Phase, I would be allowed to start my official journey.
Still, before that could happen, I had to go through the 10th month first, and it appeared that we were having a rather impressive start. Well, I was not counting the first week since that one had consisted of just the previous weekend, but on Mewday of week two, I got some big news. Thankfully, the news was not related to any disaster since that would have been big bad news. No, this was personal news of the best kind.
Roughly an hour after lunch, Mothra/Butterfree advanced to the (high) dark gold stage, which I, or rather one of my thought streams, swiftly noticed, and I was not the only one who did. The undulations spreading from her attracted the attention of many others and they quickly came to her side to congratulate her.
I naturally did the same using the thought stream that was keeping an eye on Utopia, and once my work was done, I rushed inside Utopia to congratulate her once more, but this time in person. I made sure to give her a bunch of her favorite snacks and asked her what she wanted to do after dinner, which was how I ended up holding an impromptu concert until midnight. If this did not count as a great start I did not know what did, and surprisingly I did not have to wait too long for some more good news.
On Grouday of the same week, during the routine check-up, I came across some very good news while checking the Eevee Squad, more specifically while checking Jean/Eevee's status sheet. After Borr/Eevee (Shiny), Jean was the second member of the Eevee Quartet to complete their limit-breaking phase, and unlike Borr's case, this was doubly good news for Jean.
Jean, unlike her fellow Eevee, was planning to evolve into an Eeveelution that did not require a material trigger, specifically Espeon, so unlike them, she did not have to wait until the (high) silver stage to reach the optimal evolution point. The only reason we waited until the completion of her limit-breaking phase was because she wanted to wait until that point.
Anyway, this meant that Jean would first evolve to Espeon before she broke through to the silver stage, which would give her a better set of starting parameters than she would have gotten if she had done so as an Eevee. I naturally shared the good news with Jean, causing those around her to congratulate her, but like those before her, Jean had to wait with everything until I was done checking the rest of our family as well.
That took another 40 minutes, and as soon as I was done with the last check-up, I announced Jean's upcoming evolution as well as breakthrough over UtopiaFM. With that out of the way, we headed to the Eevee area and waited for the spectators to arrive. Hypno was the first to arrive, followed by the Spinda Quartet, and before long everyone interested had arrived.
That being the case, I pulled out the supplements I had prepared for Jean's evolution before waving Fortuna/Togekiss over so that she could do her thing before Jean got plastered with the external supplements. Nyx/Umbreon as well as the Eevee also followed suit and hugged Jean while wishing her good luck.
Naturally, I did the same, and only after that did I start applying the external supplements, while levitating the ones that had to be ingested over to Jean so that she could gulp them down. Once she was fully covered and had consumed everything, I offered her a final good luck before retreating to the circle. I then told her to go ahead, and she erupted in a bright light.
I was quite curious how her evolution would go, more specifically what kind of impact her evolution to Espeon would have on her alternate ability. Jean was an ability variant after all, and Normalize was a pretty interesting ability, though I was seriously hoping it would adapt to her new typing. If not, it could have a pretty negative impact on Jean as an Espeon.
To a certain degree, any non-normal type evolution posed a certain risk to Jean due to Normalize, but I was pretty confident that the chances of the worst-case scenario happening were below 0.000001%, and I had made sure to talk about all this with Jean when we discussed what Eeveelution she wanted to evolve to. I had at the time offered her to research if there was a "normal type" Eeveelution, and how one could trigger it, but she had been determined to evolve to Espeon, so I let it be.
As things stood, I was relying on 3 things in this matter. First, the fact that no Pokemon I had come across so far or heard about had any abilities that had an entirely negative impact on its holder, which would kinda be the case if Normalize remained unchanged. My second reliance point was Utopia, and the third was our lucky charm. Without these, I would probably have tried to be more persuasive while discussing her Eeveelution options.
Anyway, the evolution finished quite smoothly, and at the place where an Eevee had been sitting, an Espeon was curiously checking out her new body right now. The Eevee Squad rushed ahead of me and dog-piled Jean, making me laugh a bit since the same had happened to Borr, and at the time Jean had been amongst the ones dog-piling Borr. Oh, how the turns had tabled.
Still, no matter how funny I found the whole thing, I still picked Jean up, freeing her from the pile, and hugged her to congratulate her on her evolution. Jean actually used her new psychic powers to thank me mentally though since she was new to this all she managed to send were feelings of gratitude instead of actual words, which was impressive enough as it was.
I made sure to praise her for that, before letting her down so that the others, who had come over by now, could do their thing. In the meantime, I looked through her new/updated status sheet.
'Name: Jean
Species: Espeon*
Gender: Female
Age: 6+ years
-
Type: Psychic*
Potential: Light Purple (94.36%)*
{Light Purple (0.18%) -> (1.94%) -> (94.36%)}'
Looking at her potential, I could not help but be surprised. I honestly had not expected the supplements to be so effective. Instead of the 50-60%, I had been predicting, she ended up with an increase of more than 92%. It seemed like we had gotten lucky, and I made sure to share the news with Jean, who was very happy to hear that.
Following that, I looked at her ability section, and I could not help but be both happy and a bit disappointed with what I saw.
'Modifiers: Ability-variant
Abilities: Magic Bounce*, Psionate*'
I was happy that Normalize adapted to Jean's type change, at least I was assuming that was what happened, but I was disappointed that Adaptability had been replaced as well. Don't get me wrong, Magic Bounce was a pretty great ability that allowed its holder to reflect any status-changing moves, but in this case, I would have preferred it if Adaptability had stayed since it had a fantastic synergy with energy conversion abilities, which I was assuming Psionate to be.
This was the first time I heard of this ability, and while I was pretty sure it was the psychic version of Normalize, I still made sure to read its description for confirmation. As I had suspected, the description confirmed that Psionate was pretty much Normalize for psychic/psionic energy and that it worked like the other 4 known energy conversion abilities that turned normal type moves to their respective typings, those being Aerilate (Flying), Galvanize (Electric), Pixilate (Fairy), and Refrigerate (Ice).
Psionate converted any normal-type moves used by Jean to psychic-type ones, and just like the other abilities Psionate also boosted those moves by 30% on top of that. If she had not lost Adaptability, the combination of it and Psionate would have meant that each one of Jean's "psionated" psychic moves would have received a 160% boost in power, making them 2.6 times as strong as they would be without these two abilities.
Conversely, her regular psychic moves would have been solely affected by Adaptability only receiving a 100% boost, so they would have been "only" 2 times as strong. However, she had lost Adaptability, so her "psionated" moves only received an 80% boost, while her psychic moves received the regular 50% STAB bonus.
Unfortunately, all I could do on the matter was to hope that she would unlock a talent like that at some point. If not, I was hoping that she regained Adaptability as her third ability after attaining light aurora potential, even if that one seemed unlikely/a bit illogical.
Anyway, I shared the good news with Jean, because that was what it was, and I made sure to not mention anything negative about the loss of Adaptability. I was sure at least Gwen/Gardevior would be able to feel something off about my mood, but neither she nor anyone else mentioned anything in that direction.
While the others were discussing Psionate, I continued to look through the rest of Jean's status sheet.
'Affinities: Normal, Psychic*'
Her unlocking a psychic affinity alongside her new typing was normal, just like her whole type relation chart changing.
'Immunity:
None {Ghost removed}
-
Resistance:
Fighting (Minor)*, Psychic (Minor)*
-
Weaknesses:
Bug (Minor), Ghost (Minor), Dark (Minor)* {Fighting (Minor) removed}
-
Standardized:
None'
This section was no longer nearly empty, but honestly, I was 50/50 on whether the change was a good one or not. I was sure that most would see it as a negative one since exchanging two minor resistances for three minor weaknesses along with the loss of her ghost immunity seemed a bit much.
Still, the change happened and we would have to deal with it. Besides, the change was not too bad, and we could slowly deal with those weaknesses after Jean broke through to the silver stage. At least the next change caused by her evolution was a purely positive one.
'Masteries:
Normal E. Manipulation (Advanced)
Psychic/Psionic E. Manipulation (Proficient)*'
Due to her new typing, Jean automatically gained a corresponding manipulation ability, and it got a rather high start due to her high mastery of Stored Power and Calm Mind. It was a bit unfortunate that moves converted by Psionate did not count since it would have given her an advanced start, but I could understand why since the conversion was an automatic/passive process.
The final good but expected change was the addition of Confusion to Jean's move pool. This was one of the cases where an evolution was accompanied by a move that nearly all members of the species learned, and once Jean had raised Confusion to beginner mastery, I would have her start learning Psychic.
'Techniques:
-
Novice:
Confusion*
-
Proficient:
Mimic (+), Shadow Ball (+), Star Shield (C, new)
-
Advanced:
Stored Power (+), Calm Mind (+), Swift (+), Hyper Voice (+), Quick Attack (+)
-
Combos/Custom:
Star Shield (Proficient)'
Anyway, I shared all the changes with Jean before asking her if she wanted some time to get used to her body or if she wanted to deal with her breakthrough straight away. Jean ended up choosing the latter, so I asked the others to give us some space.
While the others formed a circle around Jean, Fotuna, the Eevee Sqaud and I once more wished Jean good luck before joining the others as spectators. Jean initiated her breakthrough on my signal, and just like her evolution, her breakthrough went perfectly smoothly as well. Once her (mid) silver undulations began to spread, the Eevee Squad and I made our way to her side.
I had to laugh when they dog-piled her once again and after we congratulated her on reaching the silver stage, I checked her updated status sheet.
'Name: Jean
Species: Espeon
Gender: Female
Age: 6+ years
-
Type: Psychic
Potential: Deep Purple (54.36%)*
{Light Purple (94.36%) -> Deep Purple (54.36%)}'
Her sparkling new potential was certainly great to see. She was now more than halfway to light aurora potential, and as it stood, it would be a "miracle" if she did not attain light aurora during her next breakthrough. Next, I looked at the other sections, and I could not help but be a bit disappointed that the talent section was empty, though I had expected it due to the smoothness of her breakthrough.
The next change was her parameter section, which was decentish, but definitely much better than it would have been if she remained an Eevee.
'Parameters:
Stage: Silver Stage (mid)*
Vitality: E
Strength: E
Endurance: E
Agility: C
Energy Capacity: B
Energy Density: D'
I would have her focus on those Es first before swapping to her Energy Density, which should allow her to reach the (high) silver stage. One thing was certain though, and that was that she would progress faster than her fellow squad members, at least until they evolved as well.
Anyway, there were no further changes, so after sharing the ones that I found with Jean, I began to pull out the stuff we needed for the celebration, and we partied until as well as beyond dinner.
