White Ribbon

▪David pov▪

After taking a quick shower, I ran into the closet and took out my night clothes. Changing into my clothes, I ran out, expecting to find Pearl asleep, but she wasn't even in the room. The bathroom door which I had left ajar was in the same place meaning she hadn't gone in there. Even if she went in without touching the door, the light was not on and she's afraid of the dark.

I walked outside in the hallway infront of the room, expecting her to come back holding a glass of water or something. I walked back and forth for about five minutes, then I went down to the kitchen where Mrs. Gray was washing the cutlery.

"Mrs. Gray have you seen Pearl?" I asked.

"No, sir. But I think Mrs. Myers would be sleeping in one of the guest rooms if she is not in the master bedroom." The maid said, turning to me and nodding her head, then turning back to the unwashed cutlery.

"Okay, could you please get me the keys, Mrs. Gray?" I said going to stand next to the door.

I stood there and waited as Mrs. Gray opened a cabinet and picked up a tray with thousands of keys in it. She looked through them for a minute then took out a key ring full of keys. The ring had a tag on it which said, 'guest rooms'.

[How many guest rooms do we have?!] I thought, dumbfounded looking at how many rooms I would have to look through if I didn't know the exact room Pearl was in.

She looked through the keys for a second then took hold of a key with a white ribbon tied to it.

"Try the guest room at the other end first. Mrs. Myers usually goes to that room to vent." Mrs. Gray said, handing me the ringlet and then she turned back and started doing the cutlery again.

"Thankyou, Mrs. Gray." I said and walked out of the kitchen. I walked for a while than ran to the last guest room, to the left of the Master bedroom, at the end of the hallway.

The door handle, like the key, also had a white ribbon tied around it. I turned the handle but it was locked. Inserting the key, I turned it, and once I heard the clicking sound, I quietly opened the door and took a look inside.

The windows were open and the curtains were fluttering in the night breeze. The room had white everywhere. Only the walls were a very very light shade of grey which almost looked white shone by the moonlight streaming in through the open window. The dresser, table and shelves all has a white cloth covering them. Even the carpet was pure white. The bed had a white curtain like canvas above it.

Pearl lay there, covered in a thick white duvet, sleeping peacefully. Taking the duvet off of her, I picked her up. Holding her securely in my arms, I walked out of the room, locking the door behind me.

I walked straight back to our bed room and tucjed pearl into bed. After I made sure she was comfortable, I quietly left the room and went over to the kitchen.

"Mrs. Gray, you can have the keys back." I said as I entered.

Mrs. Gray, who was mopping the floor, hearing me put the mop against a chair and walked over to me, taking the keys from my hand, she slowly walked to the cupboard. Opening the cabinet, she put the keys into the tray with the rest of the keys.

"Goodnight, Mr. Myers." Mrs. Gray said, going back to the spot she was and started to mop the floor again.

"Goodnight." I said and walked back to the bed room.

Laying down next to Pearl, I hugged her to my chest. Following the sound of her heartbeat, I fell asleep next to her.
