Chapter 24: Haki
(Roberts: POV)
When the battle was over my crew and I quickly went to work.
Since we didn't know if the marine ship that just attacked us had called in reinforcements upon spotting us, and stick around to find out was in none of our interests.
So we tossed the bodies of the dead marines into the sea, and then quickly searched their ship for any and all valuables.
In doing so we found several maps, a good amount of money, and a generous amount of weapons and ammunition. But not much else.
Though none of us were upset about that.
We took what we could and then set sail, leaving the marine vessel behind us.
Once we were far enough of way I called everyone for a meeting on deck.
A smile on my face I looked at my crew. "Good job during the battle you guys. I can safely say our first battle against the marines was a complete and utter success."
My crew let out a round of cheers in response to my words.
"On that note I also want to make sure you guys don't let this simple victory go to your heads. We'll face much greater challenges from the marines and even others in the future." I spoke.
"Yeah, we understand captain." Bepo said.
"We do." Weisz added. "We also know to face those challenges we need to get stronger. Much, much stronger." He said. A burning determination in his eyes from what I can see.
I guess Weisz first real battle as part of the crew sparked a desire for growth in him.
Good.
My crew being self-motivated will only make us that much better in the long run.
"Well said Weisz, and on that note I think it's time I teach and inform you all about something extremely important." I said.
I then quickly set things up.
A chalkboard, a row of chairs on deck, an pointer, and finally I put on a pair of fake glasses.
"Alright everyone, time for Mr. Soren daily lesson." I told the others.
"Uh Roberts, what the hell are you doing?" Weisz teaching.
"Exactly what I said. Teaching you guys about something extremely important. Now take your seats, the lesson is about to begin." I said. Using a finger to adjust my fake glasses as I did so.
The light of the sun reflecting off them in the process.
Weisz looked like he wanted to question me again, but instead of doing so he took a seat in the row of chairs I set up. The others following suit.
"Good. Thank you." I said. "Now then today's lesson with revolve around the mysterious but wonderous power known as haki."
"Ah. the thing you taught me right?" Alfia asked.
"Yes." I replied. "Also Ms. Alfia do not talk out of turn again. Otherwise I'll have to punish you."
"Fufu, you can punish me anytime Mr. Soren." Alfia purred out.
"Hey, you two can flirt later get back to the explanation please." Weisz grumbled.
As he did so Alfia turned towards him and started glaring daggers.
"Ok, ok, settle down students." I said. Feeling tired already.
Boy, being a teacher is harder than I thought. Now I regret making fun of my teachers in my previous life.
At my words Alfia and Weisz settled down and focused their attention back on me.
"Thank you both." I said. "And what Alfia said earlier is true. I did teach her haki, but only one of them."
As I did so Reiju raised her hand.
"Yes, Ms. Reiju, what is your question?" I asked her.
"So there is more than one type of haki? Also did you learn about it from your mysterious teacher Oda?" Reiju asked.
"Yes to both questions." I replied.
"Thank you for answering my question Mr. Soren." Reiju replied. A playful smirk on her face as she did so.
If she were just a few years older I would suspect she is coming onto me. But I'm sure she's just having some fun right now.
I think.
But if not, well I'll leave that for future Roberts to deal with.
"No problem." I said. "Now back to the main topic of discussion. Haki. It's a mysterious power that all living things in this world have the capacity to awaken and learn. Though most never do. However for all of and our future crewmates learning haki is a must."
"Why?" Law asked me.
"Because all high-ranking marines and the strongest pirates sailing the seas can use haki. So we must learn it to be able to fight against them." I replied. "If we don't surviving the second half of the Grand Line will be impossible."
"Second half?" Weisz questioned. "I thought the Grand Line was just one big sea?"
"It is. But what most people don't know is that he Grand Line is divided into two halfs. The first is called Paradise. Since compared to the second half of the Grand Line that's what it is. A paradise."
Weisz swallowed a lump in his throat at my words. "I'm afraid to ask but I want to know. What is the second half of the Grand Line known as?"
"They call it Hell." I spoke. "But it's common name is the New World. That's where the strongest pirates in the sea sail and haki is commonplace. So like I said we all need to learn haki if we are going to survive there and conquer those waters. Moving on, allow to explain to you all the different types of haki."
I raised three fingers on my right hand.
"First off, there are three types of haki. But I will begin by explaining the two most prominent types." I spoke. I then put down one of my fingers. "The first is known as observation haki. That is the type of haki Alfia and I can use at the moment. This type of haki grants one a sixth sense that allows them to sense the presence of others, even if they hidden. It also allows one to distinguish truth from lies, predict an opponents attack, sense the feeling and emotion of others, as well as sense the potential strength in others. Also if one trains their observation haki far enough then at a certain point they will be able to literally glimpse several seconds in the future."
"Wow, so cool." Bepo said.
"I agree Bepo, it is cool. But just like with anything haki has its downsides. For observation haki there are several. If one is a skilled enough lier than fool even observation haki and lie as easily as breathing. Also if an attack is too big or too fast to avoid then observation haki becomes useless. One more thing is that to use observation haki to its fullest extent one must remain calm, otherwise your observation haki will not work." I stated. "Alright, next up his the second type of haki, armament haki."
I put down a second finger.
"This type of haki allows one to literally form an invisible armor around themselves. Which can be used for both offense or defense. Armament haki can even be applied to weapons from swords to even the bullets fired from guns. This type of haki also has one more important advantage to it. Show of hands, how many people know about logia-type devil fruits and their properties?"
Everyone raised their hand, even Bepo.
"Thank you." I said. "You can put your hands down now." I told everyone.
Which they did.
"So since you all know about Logia-type devil fruits I don't have to explain them. What that has to do with armament haki is that by learning this type of haki you can land a hit on anyone, even if they possess logia-type devil fruit parts. For reasons even I don't know armament haki forces logia-type and special-paramecia-type devil fruit users to turn solid, and thus take damage from any attack you land infused with it. Now just to be clear armament haki doesn't negate devil fruit powers like sea stone does, but it will give you a chance to defeat your opponent should you encounter one like I just described. Which we most certainly will in the future." I explained. "Also just like observation haki armament haki has different levels of proficiency. The first is known as emission, where an armament haki user literally projects their haki out of their body and damages their opponent or surroundings. While the most advanced form of armament haki is known as internal destruction. Using the this method the armament haki user literally projects their haki directly into an opponent or there surroundings, destroying them from the inside out."
Seeing that everyone was following along with my explanation I decided to continue.
"Now we move on to the final type of haki." I spoke. Putting down my last finger. "This type of haki is known as the conquerors haki. But unlike the other two types of haki people cannot learn it, but they must be born with it. For this type of haki shows that one has the qualities of a king. This type of haki allows one to force their will upon others. Also if a person Conqueror haki reaches a high level they can utilize a technique known as Infusion, where they coat their body and attacks in conqueror haki just like armament haki, increasing their attack and defense even further. Any questions?"
"When do we start leaning haki?" Weisz asked me.
"We can start right now." I replied.
A smirk on my face as I did so.
Thus my crews haki training began in earnest.
