Chapter Forty-Nine: Homecoming

I woke up to that same damn beeping as I registered a weight on the side of my bed. Rikki must have fallen asleep. I opened my eyes to find Jude there, his head resting on his hands.

I sat up and winced, startling Jude awake. He looked up at me with sleepy eyes, but a soft smile on his beaten face. Panic filled my stomach.

“Jude?” I asked trying to gauge how hurt he was.

Jude only smiled wider as tears welled in his eyes. He didn’t seem nearly as panicked as I was.

“You threw a clot after the first surgery. They got to it pretty quickly, you got pretty lucky,” he said softly.

I felt as if I had woken up in the twilight zone. I glanced around the room waiting for men withguns to break in and drag him out but it was just us. Any sign he was worried about the same thing was nonexistent in his demeanor.
