Chapter 41

Coop put his bags in the bedroom with the comment that he could sleep on the sofa—or on the floor if the sofa was too short to be comfortable. I told him we’d figure that out later. I don’t think either of us had any illusions where he’d end up, but for the time being, we pretended it would be the sofa.

By then, it was almost dinner time, so I wasn’t surprised when Coop said we should find somewhere to eat. “The more I’m out and about, the easier it will be for us to spot them if they’re around. They’re not going to take potshots at me while we’re walking or driving, but they will follow us. They’ll figure their best bet will be when I come out of the restaurant after dinner. Or they will if they think like me.”

“Which is not a given.”

“True.” Coop pulled the curtains closed, then asked me to check the street to see if there were any cars I didn’t recognize. “It’s a residential neighborhood, so most of them should belong to home owners. Right?”
