4 Grandpa's test

"Sister it's alright if you don't know table manners yet, I can teach you!" Sofia might have sounded like she's being helpful and kind but shes indirectly stating that I still have a lot to learn about nobility.

"It's alright Fia!"

I say as I pick up the knife and fork and swiftly but elegantly start cutting the steak until I have made perfect squares. Sofia's face goes red in embarrassment.

"Join me for chess later."

Suddenly a voice broke in.

"Ok, Grandpa!"

Sofia says, everyone nods,

'Of course its Sofia, that old man only calls his favorites and potential successors to play chess, and he definitely wouldn't call that country bumpkin he just met!'

"Not you, Kathrine."

"Yes, grandfather."

"B-but... I think I should come, sis might not know HOW to play chess!" Sofia says forcing a smile.

"I do."

'UHHHH this country bumpkin always has to interrupt me!"

The people who thought Sofia would get chosen still couldn't process what had just happened, and did they see correctly Sofia's face lost its calmness for a second there.

**************************

After I finish my meal I follow the maid to 'Kathrine's' grandfathers study.

'By the looks of their facial expressions and Sofia's expression back there it seems as if though being called to the study meant a big thing to everyone.'

As I was stuck in my thoughts the maid suddenly stopped in front of a large wooden door at the end of the hallway.

"Here we are."

I nod in confirmation. The maid knocks on the door and opens it a few inches to poke her head in.

"Miss. Faye is here sir."

The maid says in a loud and clear voice. I just hear a hum in affirmation from inside as the maid takes her head out of the door and gestures for me to go inside. I nod (lots of nodding in this story I hope my character's neck doesn't break) to dismiss the maid and head inside.

"I'm here Grandfather."

"Sit."

He points towards the seat in front of him, both seats were separated by only a chessboard.

I sit and see he had already made the first move so I just start and make mine. This went on for a couple of minutes, both of us just sat there in silence and played chess not talking until,

"Checkmate"

I say as I place the last piece on the board. The old man's eyes were so amazed they almost popped out, I won without losing a single piece!

"Just call me Grandpa dear!"

He says with a smile creeping onto his face, his expression now was totally different from when I first entered the room it made me wonder did he have a split personality? Or actually... was this a... test?
