2 Chapter Two: Urgent Mission

After making sure his wounds were properly healed, Erina left together with Aurora and soon after that, a boy came to tell Emilia that Michael wanted to see her, so she had to leave too.

With everyone gone now, the room was finally quiet with Devon lying on the bed with his gaze on the ceiling and a lot of thoughts running through his mind.

'What was that thing that I saw earlier?' He said subconsciously before sitting up on the bed.

That thought alone was the trigger button.

"What is this?" He muttered with a shocked expression on his face.

He closed his eyes and open them expecting the message to go away just like before but it was still there.

'Am I dreaming?' He thought. 'No, this isn't a dream, but how is this possible?'

"Oh, there you are."

He was startled by that voice and quickly turned around to see a boy just about his age standing there with a cheeky smile on his face.

"Oh, did I startle you?" He said with a little chuckle before he made his way to the chair beside the bed and sat down there.

"John," Devon muttered.

On a normal day, he would have grumbled but because of the system screen in front of him that he was still trying to figure out, he wasn't in that kind of mood.

John was also one of the people who grew up in the orphanage but unlike the other ones who lost their parents on a certain day, he never knew who his parents were to begin with.

He had black hair that seemed to be spiky in a kind way, his face was slightly rectangular shaped, and he had a pair of black eyes, a concave nose, and thin red lips.

He was by no means muscular but he had nice arms and a better body compared to Devon.

A distinguishable feature he had was a little scar on his right cheek.

Devon thought that maybe if other people could see what he was seeing right now, then maybe it would clear things up for him a little so he stared directly at John expecting him to say something.

"Hey, why are you looking at me like that?" John asked with an uncomfortable expression on his face.

'So, he can't see it.'

"Um….nothing, I was just out of it for a moment there." He shook his head before turning his gaze away from him.

"Oh, and what were you thinking?" John asked before suddenly leaning closer to him.

"Huh? What's that look for?" Devon asked with a confused expression on his face.

"You know something tells me that the reason you get injured most of the time is so that Erina can touch you."

"Hey, ew, don't say that," Devon said before quickly pushing him away. "Not everyone thinks like you, John."

"Say what you want but I sure wish I was you, but I just can't afford to get injured as frequently as you do."

"You know, if it was…."

"If it was who?" John asked before leaning closer to him again.

"Nothing." Devon shook his head.

"Hmph," John said before relaxing back in his seat.

"What?"

"I just think it's funny how you're just sitting here while spicy hair is over there getting scolded because you messed up on a mission with her again." John expressed.

"Emilia's getting scolded?" He said before quickly getting up from the bed.

Before John could say anything else, he was already out of the room.

He quickly made his way through the hallway which had several fire torches on both sides to light up until he got to the particular room he wanted to get to.

"Uncle please."

He wasn't able to finish what he was saying because the person he wanted to address wasn't in the room.

The only people in the room were Emilia and a woman who had her hand on the young girl's head.

The woman who went by the name Christine Lawrence was someone who the kids who all grew up in the orphanage took as a mother figure.

She was Michael's childhood friend who helped him set up the orphanage and also volunteered to work there.

She took care of all of them until they got to this point in their lives so it was only fair if they saw her as their mother, almost all of them.

Christine had blonde hair, an oval face, almond-shaped eyes with crimson red eyeballs, she had a straight nose, long eyebrows, and thin but moon-shaped lips.

She had a slender and sleek body and looking at her hair closely although she had it tied back, the piece of strand running directly through the middle had a different color from the rest, it was white, and it was like that since she was a child.

She quickly shot Devon a glare as soon as he entered the room causing him to flinch back a little.

"Um….Miss Christine, where's my uncle?" He asked with an awkward expression on his face.

Some of them like Emilia referred to her as mother but someone like Devon just couldn't do it, he was really close with his mother before the accident and just giving another person that title didn't feel right to him. That said, he still saw her as a mother figure.

"Oh, Michael left a few minutes ago, he left me to handle your case," Christine said.

"Handle my case how?" He asked before swallowing hard.

"That will depend on your level of cooperation."

The way she stressed the words with a grin on her face sent shivers running down his spine.

"I'll be going now, Mother," Emilia muttered before slowly shifting her head away from her hand.

"Okay, dear, go get some rest."

Devon wanted to say something as she got closer to him but the words just wouldn't come out until she walked past him without saying a word.

As soon as she walked past him, it was as if his vocal cords suddenly started functioning again.

"Emilia wait."

"No, you wait," Christine said before he could take any step toward the exit.

"Can't we do this later?" He asked with an annoyed look on his face.

"No, we can't, and don't give me that look, I am the one who should be annoyed that my boy is always getting himself in trouble." She uttered.

There was nothing he could do besides sighing.

"Hey, I'm not going to be harsh or scold you like Michael does, I just want to talk to you for a few seconds." Her voice seemed to have suddenly turned to a sweet voice of a caring mother.

"Okay," Devon said before letting out a deep sigh.

_______ _______

The orphanage building wasn't tall in any way it was pretty average compared to the towering buildings of the rich folks in the city so it wasn't going to do for a certain someone who liked to climb high places whenever she wanted to calm herself down.

Fortunately for her, there was a large rock towering over the building and although it wasn't super high, it was enough for her as she could be seen sitting there right now with her gaze on the sky.

She stayed like that for a while before she suddenly heard a huff behind her and quickly turned to see that Devon was the one who had just climbed up the rock.

"I knew you would be here." He said with his breath still a little racy.

"Oh, hey, Devon." She said before turning her gaze back to where she had them before.

He wanted to say something funny but seeing the way she reacted to seeing him, that thought was carried away by the wind.

He slowly made his way to her and sat down beside her. He just sat there for a while without saying anything.

"I think I'm starting to see why you like coming here often, it's quite calm and refreshing up here." He said before taking in a deep breath.

"Yeah, the exact opposite of how you are," Emilia said.

"Oh, I guess you're not wrong if you put it that way." He said.

"Is that all you have to say?"

"No." He said before shaking his head. "I came here to say that I was sorry, I was careless and almost got you in trouble."

"You're apologizing for being careless? That's what you do all the time, you almost died, Devon."

At that point, something suddenly clicked in Devon's mind.

"Wait, you're angry because I almost died not because I was careless?" He said with a confused expression on his face.

"You've always been careless but it's never gotten to that point and I know you always do it on purpose, what would I have done if you actually died?" She asked.

Her breathing was getting heavy now as she bit her lower lip.

"I'm sorry for putting you through that," Devon said before slowly pulling her head closer to his body to calm her down. "I'll try to be extra careful from now on."

'No matter how much my intrusive thoughts try to get through.'

At that moment, someone else came up the rock.

"I knew…."

She wasn't able to finish what she wanted to say at the sight of the two.

"Oh, hey, Aurora," Devon said after he turned around and caught sight of her.

It took him a second to realize.

"Aurora? What are you doing up here?" He asked with a shocked expression on his face.

Emilia pulled away from him as soon as Devon said Aurora's name.

"I was about to ask you that question."

"Um…. it's not…."

"Forget it, I don't care anyway, Michael wants to see you, Emilia."

"Why?" Emilia asked after turning her gaze to her.

"Um, it's a mission an urgent one." She replied.
