1 Chapter One: You Could Have Died!

"The legacy has now been passed on to you, now let's see how you will run your race."

That voice echoed in his mind several times until he opened his eyes and found himself in a very dark space.

He was crouched up in one corner with endless darkness being the only thing he could see, he could feel his body but seeing it was impossible.

Perfect tranquility ruled the area with the only sound passing through his ears being the sound of his own breathing which was surprisingly softer than he expected.

He had never felt so much tranquility in his life, this would be a nice experience for some people but he never really liked the quietness and the total darkness was even making it more difficult for him to stay calm.

There was also the voice which he heard for a brief moment but wasn't able to make out everything it said.

"What's going on?" He muttered as he slowly looked around the area. "Who's there and where am I?"

Despite asking those questions, there was no one there to give him the answers he needed and that was when certain thoughts began to run through his mind.

"Am I dead?" He muttered as he curled up into a ball causing his long black hair to fall forward and cover the part of his face that wasn't covered already. "Am I really dead? And if so, is this heaven or hell and what was that voice I heard earlier?"

He was losing it and his panic mode was slowly kicking in.

"I should have listened to Emilia, at least I would still be alive, and now she's going to receive the scolding of a lifetime all because of my carelessness."

"Devon!"

He was already so lost deep in panic that he wasn't able to hear the voice the first time it called, but the second time.

"Devon, please wake up!" The voice cried again and this time he was forced to snap out of it.

"Emilia, is that you? Emilia." He called as he slowly sat up.

"Devon, come on, you can't do this to me and everyone else."

"It really is you, Emilia."

As soon as he confirmed that it really was her voice, he was able to somehow find the courage to get up on his feet.

"Emilia, where are you?" He asked as he quickly looked around to try and find her, but he wasn't able to find anything that looked like her in any shape or form because there was no way to do that in utter darkness.

"Devon!"

This time, her voice was louder than before and it was like it forced open a rift in the dark space, a rift through which Devon could now see light.

The light stung his eyes a bit like it would someone who just woke up to the bright sun on his face but for some reason he didn't try to cover his eyes like he would normally do.

"That's light." He muttered with a voice full of hope.

The very first thing his instinct told him was to start moving toward the light and that was exactly what he did without thinking twice about it.

He was staggering toward the light at first but it slowly began to grow dim as the rift happened to be closing and that alone was enough to force him to double up.

He ran as fast as he could because the light's fading speed suddenly became rapid, but just before the light could fade completely, he was able to pass his hand through what was left of it.

The sun hung above the sky and shone brightly down on a desert like area with sand hills slopping down and at the foot of one of those hills, a young girl could be found with the body of another young boy in her hands.

The boy's body looked lifeless but she was still shaking it as much as she could with tears running down her cheeks.

It was obvious that she wanted to cry out loud but for certain reasons she had to refrain from doing that.

The girl had red long hair, her hair had a brighter red compared to other people.

She had brown eyes, a small oval face, thin pink lips, and a small straight nose.

She had a slender body and was putting on a green robe that had a hood attached to it.

One distinguishing feature about her was that she had freckles under her right eye.

The boy had long black hair, it wasn't as long as hers but long enough to be called long hair for a male.

His eyes were brown and he had a slightly rectangular face with a nicely streamlined jawline.

He had a slightly pointed nose, curvy but thin pink lips and had a scar dividing the hair on his right eyebrow.

He wasn't particularly muscular, but had a good body nonetheless.

"Devon please wake up." She cried as she tightened her grip on his body.

Her voice was getting weak but she couldn't stop herself from crying.

The tears dropped down on his face like rain drops and now, it was starting to look like he got a splash of water on his face.

"It's raining now?" Devon muttered with a weak voice before slowly opening his eyes.

Those words were immediately followed with a dry cough.

As soon as she heard that voice, she suddenly paused as her sobs suddenly died down.

"Devon?" She stuttered as she looked directly into his eyes.

"Oh, hey, Emilia." He groaned before squeezing his face in an effort to smile.

"You woke up." She said in excitement before suddenly tightening her grip on his body as she let out all the tears in her eyes that were looking for a way out.

"You're squeezing me."

"Oh, yeah, I shouldn't do that or your wound may open up." She said after quickly letting go of him.

After hearing her say that, he slowly turned his gaze to the left side of his abdomen to see that she tore a part of her robe to cover up his wound.

It was at that moment that everything he experienced while he was unconscious began to come back to him.

"That voice, I saw something like that before passing out, but what is this?" He muttered.

"Huh? Did you say something?" Emilia quickly turned to him to ask.

"No, it was nothing." He muttered before shaking his head.

"Okay, let's get going before those guards decide to come down here to find us." She remarked before picking up her bow.

Devon was drained of energy because of the amount of blood he lost during his trip down from the hill and after he got down, but with the help of Emilia, he was able to keep moving.

If she had not arrived on time to stop his bleeding, he would have died for sure.

Taking him through the front of the orphanage was surely going to raise a lot of suspicions, so she decided to take him through the secret passage that led directly to the underground hideout below the orphanage.

"At this point, I'm no longer surprised, you always find a way to get into some kind of trouble almost every time you go out for a mission," Erina said before placing her hand on his wound, she had to remove the cloth covering it to heal it properly.

Among all the children who grew up in the orphanage, Erina was the only one that was born with magical abilities and it wasn't just one, she had two magical abilities.

The first one was her healing ability which she was using to heal Devon right now, and her second ability was telepathy. But having magical abilities wasn't the only thing that made her different.

She had a hair color that was quite rare among human beings, she had naturally purple hair but that still wasn't everything.

She had a long oval face, thin pink lips, and a slightly wavy but fine-looking nose to match her bright blue eyes, she was slightly taller than Emilia and also seemed to be a little bigger than her in terms of body mass.

"I think you forgot to mention that it happens every time he gets sent out with Emilia, he can't misbehave under my watch." A fierce but feminine voice came from the side.

As soon as Emilia heard that, she slowly lowered her gaze until she was looking at the floor.

The owner of the voice was also one of the people that grew up in the orphanage, Aurora.

Just like her voice suggested, she was quite fierce. Her bright green eyes would make her appear charming to anyone who didn't know her, but cross her path and you would know that she was the opposite of that.

She had long black hair, an oval face, slightly plump lips, a pointed straight nose, and really long eyelashes.

Compared to the other two females, she had a nice figure, she looked more feminine with a thick body and a fuller-looking chest.

"Yeah, yeah, I was careless no doubt but I still got the job done anyway," Devon said before raising the golden orb that was lying beside him on the bed.

"But you could have died!" Erina yelled.

The aura around her hands suddenly changed from green to red as she angrily pressed them down on his wound.

"Owwww! Erina, please!"

"Just keep quiet!"
