CHAPTER 3

MCKINLEY P.O.V

The next day I had called Luke to ask if he wanted to go to my work Christmas Party and he of course said yes. So when I headed to work on Monday and Courtney asked if he was coming, I couldn't say no.

"Yes." I answered her as we drank coffee together before we got to work.

"How was your date?"

"Really good. We just had pizza and then we walked around to look at the lights. I had a lot of fun." I smiled as I ate my bagel. "He's this simple guy and I really hope this works out." I said and she looked at me.

"You're sure that's what you want?" I nodded.

"I had promised myself years ago that I would never change my mind about stuff like this and then he walked into my life and for some weird reason I trust him." I said looking at her. I almost had tears in my eyes and I wasn't sure why. Luke had changed my mind about a few things and I have no idea how he did it .

"Did you tell him about your dad?" She whispered and I nodded. "Did he ask about your family?"

"Kinda." I said. "He asked me why I was so afraid of going on a date and I just told him."

"Have you talked to him since then?"

"Yeah, he's always texting me and I called him yesterday to see if he wanted to come to the Christmas party with me." I said as I pulled my laptop out to start typing. Our boss, Like both mine and Courtney's, asked us all to write a short story and because I already have stuff written, I'm not worried but I often have to write down my ideas.

"Did he kiss you?" She asked and I shook my head.

"Only on the cheek and forehead." I answered. "I don't think he wanted to freak me out." I answered.

"Did you want him to kiss you?" She asked and I shrugged. "Are you lying to me?"

"He doesn't need to kiss me. We just met, we're not worried about that."

"You're already on the 'we' stage." The what? Has she lost her mind?

"What are you talking about?" I asked her as I sipped on my coffee. "What is the 'we' stage?"

"The stage where you refer to both of you all the time. We bought a dog. We're going to move in together. We don't like that type of food. Stuff like that." I looked at her with the most confused look ever.

"I think you've lost your mind." She rolled her eyes at me just as my pone buzzed with a new text from Luke.

"Is that him right now?" She asked and I nodded. "What does he want?"

"To meet for lunch." I smiled at her. "Should I say yes?"

"Well duh!" She said. "I'll even give you a longer lunch." She said smiling at me.

"Really? Thanks." I said texting him back to let him know that I would love to go to lunch with him. I ave the times that I was able to leave and he said he would meet me here.

When lunch time rolled around I packed up my laptop and placed it in my purse just as Luke came into the office through the elevator.

"Hey." I said hugging him and kissing him on the cheek. "How are you?"

"I'm good, how are you?" He questioned as he grabbed my hand.

"I'm okay. A little tired. Someone! kept me up all night." I said giggling and he laughed.

"I'm sorry, I'll try to hold myself back." He said making me laugh and of course Courtney came out to say hi.

"Court, this is Luke. Luke this is Courtney, My boss so don't say anything bad." I said looking at him and he smirked.

"I would never!" He said shaking her hand. "It's nice to meet you." He said smiling at her.

"She's said nothing but good things about you." Courtney smiled and I blushed. "But you do know I'll hurt you if-"

"I know." He cut her off. "That wont be happening." I smiled at him before looking down at the ground. "Anyway, are you ready?" He asked and I nodded, grabbing my purse before we headed over to the elevators. "She seems nice." He said laughing.

"She just knows a lot and is looking out for me."

"I figured." He answered as he pressed the button for us to go down. "So I didn't really plan a place for lunch because I'm a bad person but where would you like to go?"

"I don't know, Burger King." I shrugged.

"Really?" I nodded. "Is that where you were planning to go if I didn't ask you?" I nodded laughing. "How can you eat that stuff? Wendy's is so much better."

"Okay sure it is, Mr. Book Store." I laughed as he threw an arm over my shoulder as we left the building.

"No seriously, we can go to Burger King. They have good iced coffee." He said and my face lite up.

"Yes! No one believes me! I found someone who I can trust. A good man knows his coffee." We both laughed as we made our way down the street.

"Do you drink coffee a lot?"

"Sometimes. I usually drink it at like 2 in the afternoon and then can't sleep at night." I answered and he nodded.

"Have you always had trouble sleeping?"

"Yup, since I was like fifteen." I shrugged. It has been a long hard road but I'm trying to get myself out of there and find the things that make me happy. I had to cut out every negative thing in my life.

"How do you survive without sleeping?" I shrugged. Your body eventually get's used to the fact that you get roughly four hours of sleep a night.

"My body is used to it. It just does it." I shrugged. "How do I know? I don't know." I said and he smiled at me.

"You should name the cat." He blurted and I looked at him laughing a little.

"What should I name it? Dog?"

"Yeah." He answered and I laughed. "No seriously, Like George or something." I shook my head at him laughing.

"I can't name it that."

"Why not?" He questioned, offended that I didn't like the name.

"I read this story that included two guys who barely knew each other who went on vacation together for a wedding pretending that they were dating and one of them had a dog named George."

"I'm not seeing the issue here." He said holding the door to Burger King for me.

"They had sex the whole time." I whispered and he burst out laughing.

"Even better." He said laughing more as we stood in line. "Would would you like?" He asked as I looked at the menu.

"I'll have a whopper with cheese." I answered. "And a root beer."

"Coming right up. Do you want to find us a seat while I order and wait?" I nodded my head as I walked around trying to find a table to sit at, eventually finding one in the back corner. I watched as he ordered our food and I couldn't help but want to know every little detail about him.

After dropped McKinley back off at her office, I headed back to the studio to deal with whatever the other's had gotten themselves into.

"So, how was your date with that girl on Saturday?"

"Really good." I answered Ashton. "We went out to lunch today and we're going to a Christmas Party on Saturday for her work."

"You're already going to a Christmas Party with her?" He asked and I nodded.

"Yeah, why not?" He shrugged. "What's the problem?"

"Don't you think you're moving a little too fast?"

"No? We're just getting to know each other and she didn't want to go to the party alone, there's nothing wrong with that." He shrugged as he made a beat on the drums.

"I never said that there was an issue with it." Ashton commented looking at me. "But you said she had some problems."

"Yeah, mental problems, not like she's going to murder me or something." I said looking at my email.

"I never said that either but it's hard to deal with broken people. She grew up in a broken home."

"Most people do."

"Just take it from someone who grew up in a broken home, she needs you a lot more than you think. She's got no one."

"I know that. And I want to be there for her." I answered. "I want to change her outlook on all guys. I don't want her to end up with someone like her dad." I said shifting through some papers before looking over at him as he stopped playing.

"At 22? You want to take on that challenge at 22?" I nodded. "You're sure?"

"Yes! I'm so sure!" I said raising my voice at him. "I want to be with her! She's beautiful and she has an amazing mind to go along with it! And her laugh, oh god her laugh could solve world hunger." I said yelling a little.

"Does she know you think that way?"

"No." I answered calming down a little and sitting down. "I just want to be there for her, is that so wrong?" He shook his head smiling at me.

"Not wrong at all." He answered. "Just, be careful."

"I'm being careful."

"Have you had sex yet?" I looked at him.

"Are you kidding? She's never dated a guy in her life and you think I'm going to walk in and have sex with her on the first date?" He laughed.

"I don't know. Some guys do." He said.

"Yeah but I'm not you and Michael." I said putting the paper's through the copier so if I lost them I would still have another set.

"Hey! I've never done that!" He tried to defend himself.

"Yes you have." I answered. "You slept with some girl last week and then left her."

"Alright, I guess I did." He answered and I laughed. "But she wasn't any good in bed anyway so why does that matter?"

"Are you stupid? How about teach her what you like? It's not that hard."

"Coming from the guy who's had sex about five times in the last five years." He said standing up.

"I don't have time to just be having sex with random people." I answered. I never found it to be fun anyway, having sex with some random girl you find at a club or a bar, its boring.

"But you have time to go on a date with that girl?"

"She has a name, McKinley." I said and he looked at me.

"Who names their kid Mckinley?" He asked.

"I googled her name to see the meaning." It was the most beautiful name that fit her perfectly. "It's the name of a mountain and I realized that she is this mountain with all of these peaks and I have to climb this mountain and I'm going to climb it for her."

"Do you think she knows that she's named after a mountain?

"I don't know. She might not be named after the mountain she just has the same name as the mountain." I answered. "But I'm gonna make her erode."

"What?" He questioned laughing.

"I'm gonna knock down the mountain, Ashton." I said rolling my eyes at him.

"What the fuck is erode?" He laughed, slapping his knee.

"Mountains erode!" I shouted at him. "Didn't you ever show up to Anderson's class? We learned all about it!" I shouted. I swear I was surrounded by morons.

"Yeah I did but you don't say that you're going to erode the mountain when you're talking about a girl!" He said laughing.

"She's a mountain!" I shouted shoving him.

"I know, Bro. Relax." He said sitting me down. "You don't have to try and climb the damn mountain, you don't have to knock it down. Be there when she does it herself."

"She can't do it herself. I have to be there with her."

"So walk beside her." He shrugged. "But don't 'erode' anything." He said. "I'm going on lunch, see you later."

Once Saturday rolled around I was rather stressed about this party. I knew that I didn't need to be because it was McKinley, nothing bad would happen but I didn't want to say something in front of the people she works with and she would get upset. She was meeting me at my house and then we would be driving over to her office where the party was being held.

"Luke!" I heard banging on my front door and McKinley's panicked voice. I ran to the door to unlock it before she came flying through the door. "I have to pee!" She shouted as she ran down the hall.

"Second door on the left!" I shouted to her laughing a little. When she came back down the hall she kissed my cheek.

"Hi." She smiled.

"Hey." I laughed. "Did you make it?"

"I did, yeah. Can I have a drink?" She questioned.

"Yup, have whatever you would like. You look beautiful." I said kissing her forehead as she looked in the fridge before pulling out the apple juice.

"Thank you." She smiled swaying back and forth and the black dress moved with her. "You look amazing." She commented smirking at me.

"Thank you." I smiled. She placed her glass in the sink after chugging the apple juice.

"Anyway, are you ready?" She questioned and I nodded. "Let me know when you want to leave because I gladly will." She said.

"Okay, will there be alcohol?"

"God I hope so." She said, the both of us laughing.

I was watching Luke from afar as he talked to the people I worked with and I stood with Courtney and her fiance.

"You really like him." She said pulling me out of my thoughts and I looked at her smiling.

"Yeah." I answered. There was something about him that made me fall for him and I had prayed that I wouldn't but I did anyway. "He's so different and he's so lovely." I said looking back at him and he was already looking at me. I watched as he excused himself before walking over to me.

"Are you ready to head out?" He asked and I nodded wrapping an arm around his waist. "Have a good night, it was nice meeting you." He smiled at Courtney and Nick before we headed out the door.

"I had fun." I said looking at him as he walked me out with an arm slung over my shoulders and one of mine wrapped around his waist and my other hand holding the hand that was resting next to my face.

"I did too." He answered. "Wanna go back to my place?" He asked and I nodded. "I have hot chocolate." He said his eyebrows moving up and down making me laugh. Once we stepped into the elevator he turned to me. "Can I try something?" He asked looking at me and I stared into his blue eyes nodding. He slowly moved closer to me, holding my body to his before his face moved closer to mine. I breathed in, closing my eyes as his lips touched mine.

I wrapped my arms around him holding him as close as possible as he held my face, deepening the kiss. When he pulled back, the door was open and waiting for us to step up. I blushed as I stepped out with him behind me.

"That was great!" He said as we made our way to his car. "Thank you for a wonderful night." He said kissing me again and I smiled when he pulled back.

"Thanks for coming with me."

"Anything for a pretty girl like you." He said bopping me on the nose with his finger making me giggle. "Now, let's go watch a movie and drink some hot cocoa." He said running around the other side to get in before we drove away.

"Let's go on an adventure." I said to him and he looked over at me.

"To where?"

"Have you ever climbed a mountain."

"I'm working on it."
