CHAPTER 13: THE RUINS

Everyone in the group had their eyes widen and Goblin Slayer said "That's not a goblin."

Noctis immediately yelled "Run!"

Noctis could tell right away that they did not have the right tools and they were not strong enough to take on the giant white alligator in it's own environment. As the group ran, they were approaching an edge to the sewers that dropped off deeper into the sewers.

Noctis yelled "Get ready to jump."

Noctis grabbed and carried Faye and jumped with her down the sewer. Goblin Slayer grabbed and carried Ruri. Krox went ahead and carried Dain. They jumped down about twenty feet and then kept running. Noctis then looked ahead and noticed more Goblin ships.

Noctis said, "Hey Goblin Slayer we got more ships heading our way."

Goblin Slayer looked ahead and could see the outlines. "Ruri cast a light spell onto the alligators tail."

Ruri was confused but she started her chant to do what he said. Noctis already understood what the plan was. He kept running looking ahead "There's an opening to the left let's take it."

Noctis did not even wait for a response as he made a sharp turn getting out of the main sewage line. The rest of the group gathered in the alleyway to the side of the main hallway. Goblin Slayer dropped Ruri and Krox dropped Dain. Noctis heard a cough as he looked at Faye.

Noctis quickly set her down "Sorry about that."

Faye looked away "I didn't mind."

Ruri then asked Goblin Slayer "Why did you want me to light up the alligators tail."

Goblin Slayer pointed ahead. We all looked and saw the Goblin ships heading for the alligator. "Goblins are attracted to light they think it means adventurers. For what reasons I do not know but that's what they think."

Noctis sighed as he watched the three ships full of goblins get destroyed again. "We have another problem now however."

Faye turned confused "What's that? The alligator is killing the goblins for us."

Noctis shook his head "That's not it. These goblins are clearly not from here."

Dain asked, "What do you mean?"

Noctis shrugged "Goblins are usually cowards. They would never step foot on a boat or be even near the water if they knew that this alligator was here."

Noctis scratched his neck "This also raises another question. Where did the alligator come from. The goblins have been plaguing this town down here for a while. They surely would have run into it before. Either these goblins have no idea what's down here or the alligator just appeared out of nowhere."

He continued "Especially something that size surely the city would have known about it being down here."

Goblin Slayer nodded "Well let's head back. We can go deeper and head into the ruins tomorrow."

A couple hours later

The group made it out of the sewers and were back walking around the city of Water Town. They all decided to relax in their own ways. Goblin Slayer had to take care of some other business. Ruri went to the bathhouse at the church. Then Noctis, Faye, Dain, and Krox started to go wine tasting.

The next day

The group made it the gate leading down to the sewers. The plan today was to make it to the ruins under the city and take out whatever leader the goblins have down there.

Ruri took notice of Goblin Slayer having a bird in a bird cage with him today "Why do you have a bird?"

Noctis looked down and noticed the canary "It's probably for poisonous air."

Faye was confused "Poisonous air?"

Noctis nodded "Canaries are known for being able to detect even the most subtle changes in the air when harmful."

Goblin Slayer nodded "Just in case."

Faye frowned "I could have just told you that with my wind magic. I notice those changes as well."

The group then started to head through the sewers. They ran into way less goblins today. It seemed like many were eaten by the alligator. Once they got closer to the center, they noticed down a hallway a set of spiraling stairs. They proceeded down hoping it would lead them to the ruins.

They eventually made it down to a grand stairway. Noctis looked at the walls "Look at this tapestry. It seems to depict many brave adventurers."

Krox nodded "It looks to depict the time from long ago of the war between the Gods."

While Noctis was interested he tuned out the group. He was extremely focused right now. From what he remembers this whole area is a trap. They kept making their way through a very complicated maze-like underground city, but they could not find any goblins.

Noctis commented "The lack of goblins is weird."

Faye nodded "We should have seen some by now. Maybe they were only in the sewers."

Noctis shook his head "No, that would not make sense. Many torches have been put out along the walls recently. There must be something down here."

Noctis was extremely confused and thought 'Where are the goblins, I know they are supposed to slowly follow behind us and eventually we will enter a room and they will close the door on us. But every time I look around us, I see nothing but the walls.'

They then came upon a grand set of doors. Ruri asked, "So we're going into this room first?"

Faye knelt down to look through a small opening in the door. Noctis moved her over "Let me look."

Faye got out of the way "Be my guest."

Noctis looked through the door and he could see the cracks in the walls where the Goblins should be but no goblins. Noctis thought 'Has my presence already changed so much of what is to happen?'

Noctis got up "There are no traps inside and the room is empty. I think we should just move on."

Goblin Slayer said, "We must be sure."

Dain nodded "If it's empty there is no harm in looking."

Noctis narrowed his eyes not knowing the best course of action. So, he decided to do what he could "Fine but I'm going to wait by the door to make sure nothing comes behind us."

The rest nodded wondering why he seemed more paranoid then normal. Goblin Slayer kicked down the door and they all rushed in except for Noctis who waited at the door.

He then heard Faye shout "Look over there!"

What they saw before them was a person chained up to the walls in the middle of the room. Noctis knew this was just a skeleton wearing a blonde wig, so he turned around and threw a throwing knife.

The group was shocked but when they saw the wig fall, they became aware it was just a skeleton. Noctis went back to checking around them.

However what Noctis was unaware of since he was not looking in the room. A small secret passage opened up and goblins started to slowly pour in. Ruri yelled "Goblins over there in the corner!"

Noctis quickly turned around and went inside. He then saw about twenty goblins in the corner. He let out a small breath that he did not know he was holding. He thought 'We can definitely handle that many.'

However, as he got further in, he failed to hear other footsteps. Once he was with the group the doors behind them closed shut. Noctis's eyes widened "Fuck!"

He then yelled "Kill them fast!"

Noctis started to hurl throwing knives as fast as he could as the rest besides Ruri started to attack the goblins as well. After less than a minute all the goblins who were in the room were dead. Noctis himself had killed half of them. Noctis looked at the cracks in the wall and he could now see the goblins.

He started to freak out a bit 'How is this possible? I should have been able to at least know where they were.'

He started to hear the goblins laughing. Dain was annoyed "It looks like they got one over on us."

Ruri started to become scared "No…. G-Goblin Slayer."

Goblin Slayer was trying to assess the situation, but he told Ruri "Calm down."

Noctis nodded "Ruri remember stay focused and control your breathing."

Goblin Slayer's Canary started to excitedly chirp. Faye was shocked as she felt the difference as well "Poison gas."

Krox looked around "This is not good we are trapped like rats."

Noctis nodded "But at least the gas will probably not kill us. Doesn't seem strong enough."

Goblin Slayer pulled out charcoal for everyone "Put this under your nose with some cloth. It will lessen the effect of the poison."

Everyone quickly started to put on cloth masks with charcoal. Noctis put it in under his regular mask. As did Goblin Slayer who put it under his helmet.

Goblin Slayer then tossed some items to Dain to plug up the cracks in the wall. While they did that Noctis was thinking of anything he could to make this situation more survivable. They were about to face at least a hundred goblins and a goblin champion. While their group was strong Noctis did not like their odds still. He started to move on to the coffins to block the door with Goblin Slayer and Krox.

They all got ready as they stared at the door that they blocked. Faye's ears twitched "It's quiet outside."

Noctis nodded "The poison gas had nowhere else to go so it's starting to go outside. Hopefully it killed a few."

Noctis got his throwing knives ready as Ruri started to cast protection to give them a barrier and Krox summoned some lizard skeletons to help them fight. They waited for some indication of an assault to start.
