26 Chapter 26: The Essence of Abilities

"Melinda May, my colleague."

Coulson smiled apologetically and stood up to open the door for May.

"So fast?"

"There's a pet store nearby."

May shrugged, gesturing to the two airline crates in her hands.

"Cats, dogs, and a hamster."

"You put them together?!"

"The hamster is with the dog."

May walked straight to the table in the rest area and placed the two crates on it.

"Nice to meet you, Dr. Woods. This time, I plan to buy some potted plants."

"Of course, I treat all customers equally."

Oaks nodded with a smile.

Coulson closed the door and returned to the rest area. May didn't ask Coulson why he needed the animals. The reason would become clear soon enough.

"Sorry, Dr. Woods, we need to confirm your abilities, and if..."

Before Coulson could finish his sentence, Oaks interrupted him.

"If you don't let the hamster out soon from this box, it will be scared to death by the puppy."

"Um..."

May felt a bit awkward as she opened the airline crate from which the sounds of collision were coming. She grabbed the frantic hamster that was running and dodging.

"I forgot that dogs also go after rats."

"Ahem, it needs to pee."

Oaks touched his nose and saw May making a grimace. The hamster in her hand released a liquid.

"Polluting the store environment results in a $100 fine. It's a fair deal."

He threw a towel to May and held Goose, who was getting restless.

"So, please clean up a bit. The smell is a bit strong. And if you don't want to see anything too cruel, it's better not to let it out."

Coulson and May, with embarrassed expressions, busied themselves to settle the animals before moving on to the ability testing stage.

"So, should I let them out now?"

"You may."

The hamster was confined in a small box. Coulson and May opened the airline crates, and a small kitten and a small puppy emerged.

"Meow~"

"Woof woof~"

It was a well-bred blue bicolor Ragdoll cat and an equally well-bred two-color Welsh Corgi, indicating that May had gone to a high-end pet store.

The two little ones were over three months old and not at all timid. As soon as they came out, they wanted to run and play.

"Hey, you two little ones, come here."

Oaks put Goose down and pacified its resentful gaze, then greeted the kitten and puppy.

The two little ones hesitated for a moment before happily running over to Oaks.

"You, you'll be called Moco(dog). Go and give this to that man.

You, you can be called Coco(cat). Go and give this to that woman."

Oaks gave the small puppy a toy ball containing catnip and handed a bottle of deodorant to the small kitten. The two little ones bit onto their assigned items and happily ran towards Coulson and May respectively.

"Oh, darling, you're amazing!"

May received the deodorant from Coco's mouth, pleasantly surprised. She exchanged a complicated look with Coulson as he received the bug listening device from Moco.

"So, this is Dr. Woods's ability?"

"It's more than that."

Coulson shook his head, took out his phone, showed a message to Moco, and then switched to another message and showed it to Coco.

"Coulson, even ordinary adults can't remember such complex information in such a short time."

May frowned, let alone these two little cuties with their pitiful brain capacity. Show them text?

Coulson didn't say anything and handed his phone to May.

The two little ones made whining and meowing sounds, and May saw Oaks across from her smile and speak.

"Moco saw, 'Your SIM card has made unauthorized calls to overseas numbers. Please reply to the text message for verification. Failure to do so within the deadline will result in a freeze of your SIM card service.'

And Coco saw, 'Your friend has requested a song for you, expressing their longing and blessings. Please dial 213-9527 immediately to listen.'"

Oaks looked at May, whose expression had become extremely interesting, and at Coulson, who had his forehead covered.

"Do even spies frequently get harassed by junk messages?"

"Well... We've already filed complaints about it."

Coulson weakly defended himself. He could tell that Oaks's gaze had completely changed.

He had proven his ability.

"Melinda, Dr. Woods alone is sufficient to be classified as Level 7 classified. There's no doubt about it."

"That's true. It looks like the Director will have a lot on his plate."

May exclaimed with admiration, returned the phone to Coulson, and then looked earnestly at Oaks.

"To be honest, Dr. Woods, if you could become one of us..."

"Melinda!"

Coulson raised his voice, interrupting May from continuing.

"That's against the regulations."

"...Sorry, Coulson. I will write a self-criticism when I return."

May let out a soft sigh with a downcast expression as she fell silent.

Coulson knew why Melinda May, a senior agent, lost her composure.

As May had mentioned before, even an ordinary adult would find it difficult to glance at a text message and accurately recall its contents. The poor brain capacity and intelligence of the kitten and puppy made it even more impossible for them to remember what they had seen, let alone human text.

But Oaks was able to recite the text message word for word. So if he really could communicate with animals as he claimed, it wasn't just about understanding their language or giving them commands through language.

What he could do was engage in a form of "telepathic communication" with animals.

Therefore, he could "review" the images seen by the kitten and puppy, as if watching a video. This was because the information that the brain had encountered, whether in humans or animals, would not be lost. The inability to recall it was due to a lack of effective active retrieval.

But if one could achieve telepathic communication, being in a position of power would allow them to access a wealth of information that the weaker party themselves didn't remember!

In the Bahrain incident, May encountered a young girl with a telepathic ability, albeit one that could control human consciousness.

So she immediately made a comparison between her and Oaks—one had an uncontrolled and extremely dangerous ability, while the other, as he claimed, had a simplified version of a telepathic ability that only worked on animals.

The Bahrain incident was her lifelong regret, and she didn't want Oaks's ability to potentially cause harm.

"I think I understand what you want to say."

Oaks nodded lightly, beckoning Moco and Coco to come over and letting Goose play with them first.

"But regarding these matters of mine, it's clear that they have exceeded the psychological preparedness of your visit. Let's first discuss Goose's issue—do you believe it's safe with me now?"

"Yes, Dr. Woods."

Coulson smiled wryly. As long as Oaks was safe, Goose would be safe.

"But Dr. Woods, the truth is, our mission with you isn't over yet."
