Reunion

"You finally came."

"We are here."

Just after emerging from the different space, two voices echoed in Esme's mind one after another. She hurriedly turned to Max and said, "They are here."

Max nodded, following Esme towards the end of the corridor.

Given the critical importance of the Hound Project and its status as the actual headquarters, it was impossible for anyone to enter without being noticed. As the two groups separated, the building's alarm blared throughout.

Blink and Lauren were the first to encounter the enemy. Despite a momentary panic, Lauren created an air force field to block the agents, while Blink opened a portal seemingly to trap them. However, the portal vanished halfway through, and in an instant, the agents turned into two-dimensional figures and fell to the ground.

Lauren and Blink paused briefly, feeling a bit uneasy, then continued their advance.

"Someone is coming," Esme informed Max.

"You handle it," Max instructed.

Esme nodded, her eyes instantly glowing with a golden light. "Place the gun against your forehead and fire!"

As Esme's mental command was issued, several gunshots rang out. Exiting the corridor, Esme and Max discovered a lifeless body.

Mind Abilities might seem simple, but they posed a significant threat. With a slight nod, the two swiftly traversed the corridor, arriving at individual cells.

On the corridor wall, a controller with switches for the prison doors required a password to open. Esme, seemingly knowing the password, pressed it accurately several times.

Click, click – all the cell doors swung open.

"These are Mutants who haven't joined the Hound Project yet," Esme explained.

As the doors opened, bewildered prisoners emerged. About twenty people were set free, and a woman, identical to Esme, stepped out of the front cell, wearing a prison uniform.

"I'm Sophie," she introduced herself to Max and joined Esme.

"You are free," Max said calmly, prompting the prisoners to rush out.

Among them, Max noticed another woman in the same prison uniform standing beside Esme on the other side.

It felt peculiar standing together with three identical individuals, especially since it was impossible to distinguish when the third one joined.

The three simultaneously spoke from left to right.

"I am Sophie."

"I'm Esme."

"I'm Phoebe."

After introducing themselves, the three harmonized, saying, "Thank you."

A synchronized response with identical voices.

"To destroy."

"All the hounds?"

"There is still information."

The trio seemed to communicate in three and a half sentences.

"Esme, you follow me to find information. You two will assist Blink and Lauren. You can use your abilities, but it's forbidden to use them against my people."

"Clear?"

"Understood!" They responded in unison.

Max and Phoebe then stepped away, moving in perfect sync.

Trinity.

While Esme hadn't physically been present before, Sophie and Phoebe had shared their memories with her, and she reciprocated. Thus, Sophie and Phoebe knew Blink and Lauren without needing an introduction. It was a remarkable bond – three individuals as one, yet able to function independently when separated. A thought crossed Max's mind: if they drove a car in the future, would the other two feel it too? Could they potentially drive three cars at once?

"Let's go," Esme urged, prompting Max to set aside his musings and follow her to the laboratory.

Gunshots echoed as anyone approaching Max and Phoebe found themselves controlled mentally, compelled to shoot themselves. The duo exhibited remarkable strength, and the released prisoners began to gather around them, their faces reflecting a mix of confidence and pride.

Noticing two "Esmes," Shining and Lauren were visibly surprised, especially when the two seamlessly explained their presence in unison.

Blink opened a portal, swiftly sending everyone to the designated room. While Sophie stayed with Blink, Phoebe veered off to destroy the remaining hounds.

"They have successfully evacuated, and Phoebe has gone to destroy the hounds," Esme, leading the way, reported to Max.

Max nodded, appreciating the efficiency of Esme's ability—it was more effective than a communicator.

"That's it. Here are the lists of the Hound Project and the records of all experiments. If we eliminate the key figures in charge of the current Hound Project, it won't be able to continue."

"Open the double doors!"

Max and Esme entered directly.

Upon entry, footsteps echoed from a distance.

"I'll handle this."

Max glanced at Esme, stationed at the door, who unleashed her ability.

It was ruthless. The Cuckoo Sisters were highly efficient, distinct from other Mutants. They lacked the notion of sparing lives, and killing people was well within their capabilities.

Yet, this also hinted that they weren't entirely benevolent; perhaps they harbored other intentions.

While Max might not comprehend the intricacies of cracking passwords and hacking computers, causing damage was well within his abilities. The laboratory housed several computers and rows of bookshelves, presumably filled with paper files. Initially, he dismantled the computers and thoroughly destroyed the hard drives. Setting a small fire, he hastily flipped through the paper files and tossed them in to burn.

These resources might have required substantial effort to obtain in terms of manpower, materials, finances, and time. Yet, for Max, their usefulness was limited. After burning everything, he turned to Esme.

"Are you sure there's no backup?"

"None left!"

"How's everything outside?"

"Everything is secure for now. Sophie has all the important data. However, a substantial force has mobilized outside, surrounding this place. Phoebe has already dealt with the hounds and is heading this way."

"Alright, let's go too."
