chapter - 002

Finding myself covered in the sand had not been pleasant. The first thought I had after looking at my surroundings was that all I had to pass this is to escape this desert. But seeing two daggers by my side reminded me of god's word.

'Survive'

Survive what, when all I see is sand and that too was answered by the rumbling of the ground beneath me and the emergence of a giant worm or should I say worms. Panic spread in me and I ran and ran for hours. Each time those worms got close to me, words that should not be heard by children were coming out of me like music. Each time I narrowly escaped from the disgusting slimy mouth coming at me with a few scratches, my anger was directed towards the only being I can remember as with time except my name, the rest of the memories of my past life were fading away.

I ran and ran towards the oasis I found in the desert as they were the only places where strangely these monsters did not come. But I could not hide in them forever as they only provided two days' worth of rest. I did not need to eat in this place but I did need to sleep as I did get tired and it also helped in recovery of my wounds very quickly.

The same routine followed for a week when for the first time except for the bloody worms I saw some other monster. A half-man half-scorpion monster and that too the same size as me. If I had not learned to be silent in my walk around here, I would have started laughing out loud.

I had cautiously approached the damn thing to kill it quickly with the dagger but it still had noticed me. It had been a full 5-hour fight with it when I managed to kill but the loss was an arm which I later found could be regenerated in the oasis after a 2-hour rest.

From then on, I had a few goals set ahead of me. Try making myself as silent as possible so that not even those scorpions can find me while also trying to better myself in combat and increase my weapons mastery. How do I do it? Did I forget to tell you that the dagger given by god can change shape.

And so time passed, and two years had gone by. I had encountered many and fought all of them except for the worms. From slow mummies to weapon-wielding mummies, desert trolls, medusas, and giant eagles. These fights allowed me to master many weapons, gave me the ability to balance my body easily as fighting on the sand was very difficult and slippery, and also allowed me to learn to keep calm during any sudden developments as a monster popping out of the sand was common.

Being torn in half or being crushed by a medusa had helped me develop pain tolerance in less than half a year and I was already used to blood in my old world as I remember but here I got used to gore too. But no matter how strong I became, I was still no match for these worms, and from what I observed during these two years there were a total of 10 worms. 8 normal ones and two despite being smaller in size pack enough punch to kill two big ones alone. And my goal from what the slip from god had told me was that I have to destroy the egg being protected by those two.

I had many times but those two don't even move and send the rest 8 after me. This had happened many times and that is how ended up in the situation I am currently in.

Sighing, I get up and move towards the next oasis I had found to recover. These days the worms had been relentless like they wanted to take care of the bug quickly. I suddenly stop. Yeah, there really may be something going on. I forget about taking a rest as I make my way towards my target.

On my way, I find many groups of monsters which is odd as many monsters hunt alone. Guess I can learn to fight in groups. As I reach the place, I see the formation of a second egg. By how slow the progress is going, it will take at least 2 weeks to a month, and remembering how big a commotion the first one caused, I can take this chance to complete the trial with the second egg too.

I quickly return to not be noticed by the worms. I just get excited thinking about how I can finally complete the trial. But before that, I have to reduce the number of monsters gathering.

***********

Three weeks have gone by and I have reduced as many monsters as I could, and guess what, I finally managed to get a worm. It got singled out while chasing me and took me a whole day to kill it. Had to dive into its mouth while holding a double-sided spear. After which I had to puke my guts out but I was nonetheless happy.

Looking at the monsters all circling the parameter of the dome where the eggs were, I could not help but get nervous as I had got only one short at this. If I win, I go being a happy moon knight in some neighborhood and if not, I will have to wait for the next chance if it will even come.

I slowly approach the monster on one side and start my killing spree. I have to be quick about it and the longer it took the lesser time I will have. Fast on my feet, I reach the dome and do find any worms. I look down towards the slight bulges on the ground and sigh. I look towards the light coming from the center where the second egg is almost finished forming.

The moment it finishes, a loud rumble spreads throughout the land, shaking everything. I run towards the first egg and ignore the roaring of the worms when they find the little intruder inside their nest. I just have to avoid the ones in front of me and keep running.

As I see the egg close, a smile blossoms on my face and I reach my hand out. I fail to see a shadow pass by me and it thrashes into my body sending it flying across the dome. I cough out a mouth of blood and look down to where my hand should have been.

I start to lose consciousness at the loss of blood and see that the second egg has completely formed. I black out. The worms seeing the bug stopped moving thought it died and focused on the more pressing concern. The destruction of the first egg caused by the worm that hit Ethan away. It had failed to control its body and smashed into the egg.

*************

I slowly open my eyes and find myself sitting on a couch with a bunch of comics, DVDs, and games all around with Morgan Freeman sitting in front of me observing me.

"Déjà vu?" I mutter.

Morgan started laughing out loud.

"No, it's just that you blacked out after completing the trial, by luck if I say." Mor- no god told reminding me of all my time in the trial.

"So I passed?" I asked with light returning in my eyes. He nods and I sigh in relief.

"You can rest for a while. After that, you will go your way." I nod and close my eyes, remembering everything I experienced. I knew I had gotten stronger, no wait where's all the strength I had amassed?

I get up and directly asked.

"The trial was for strengthening your soul so that you can get the power of Moon Knight as otherwise it would have been provided by Khonshu. The need for the trial altogether makes you ready for your next world. Now the strength is gone but the skills are still there. And you won't get some system to check your status. Just focus on your Soul and you will instinctively feel your status as your soul is strong enough." was his answer.

"Now that you seem so energetic all of a sudden, let's get you going then." god said and walked over to me. "I wish you well in your next life. There may or may not be a starting bonus for you as they call it. Depends on your luck."

He moved his hand and brought it toward my chest. He then pushed.

"Good Bye, Ethan."

I fell.

And my new life began.
