CHAPTER 13

"You're awfully quiet today," Jasper said, his voice smooth as silk, yet laced with something I couldn't quite place.

I glanced up from my desk, forcing a neutral expression. "Just focused on work," I replied curtly.

His lips curled into a half-smile, but his eyes studied me too intently. "Focused is good. But don't let the pressure get to you. If there's anything you need, Skylar, you only have to ask."

I gave a noncommittal nod, pretending to return to the document in front of me. His presence in my office, as casual as it appeared, was anything but comforting. The knowledge that he'd helped me get this job gnawed at my mind.

Had it been out of kindness? Or was there something more calculated at play?

"Actually," I said suddenly, lifting my gaze to meet his. "There is something I've been meaning to ask you."

"Oh?" His interest piqued, and he leaned slightly against the edge of my desk. "Ask away."
