Jane had intended to put Scarlett in her place, but she was unexpectedly outmaneuvered on the spot.
Her expression cooled, Jane said, "You might not be aware of my ability to get things done. I don't make idle threats."
Scarlett replied, "I'm aware of your status in Deep City and I know you're not joking. That's why I'm being straightforward with you."
Jane fell silent. Scarlett continued, "We can't read minds. My promises might mean nothing to you, and likewise, I don't trust yours. Mia and I are capable of earning our own money. Why should we live on someone else's threats and handouts? Just because someone needs to nip potential problems in the bud?"
Jane retorted, "It might be impolite to say this, but it's true. In Deep City, I can do much more than you."
Scarlett shot back, "Can you make Lucius like you?"
Jane's gaze hardened at Scarlett's words, her silence revealing a soft spot.
