28 A Pattern

Vera couldn't be positive at first but she thought she was beginning to notice a pattern. Kane was there a handful of times over the summer during Casey's internship but showed up a lot more often once school started again. Particularly during midterms or group projects.

There were a few signs. When Casey only responded to her affection instead of initiating it himself, spoke for a long time without mashing any words together or switching sounds, or cursed/complained more often.

That was it. Kane was very good at hiding it for the most part. She supposed it was because of how long the two of them had been split. He had years and years of practice.

He had her fooled until she knew what to look for. Now that she did, she double checked her suspicions with the notebook when Casey was asleep since it seemed to only have entries when switches happened and significant information needed to be shared.
