It was not ok, Damien was furious. “You did what?” His voice was low in the way that it only got when the other man was pissed. “You volunteered to tie your life to someone you don’t even know? Of all the idiocy-“

“They’re dying, Damien.” Ishaan said quietly, looking into his friend’s eyes. “They’re the last thousand of their species and they’re all about to die.”

“It is true,” Carina said, looking up and meeting Damien’s eyes. “When I die, when the magic finally gives out, the Flight will die.”

“And I’m sorry for that, but you know what’s going to happen if we bring an unknown, unstudied species into the midst of the Planetary Council.” Damien’s eyes flashed between Ishaan and Carina. “They’re going to want to study them, study her.”

“If it saves the Flight, I will consent to whatever is needed.” Carina said and the utter conviction in her voice made Damien wince. “I will already have a successor in the house and against the lives of those I protect, mine means very little.”
