A shattered illusion

Taking a deep breath, Scarlett crept towards the door, her heart hammering out a frantic rhythm against her ribs. The voices were low, barely audible, but she could feel the tension crackling through the air. Should she barge in and demand answers? The image of her usually composed father, caught off guard and potentially furious, flashed in her mind. Maybe listening in was the safer option, for now.

Pressing her ear against the cool oak, she strained to hear.

"...risky, Arthur," her father's voice rasped, a hint of fear lacing his words.

We can't afford any mistakes. The consequences would be catastrophic."

A shiver ran down her spine. Consequences of what? Her grip on the doorknob tightened. The other voice, a man's, sounded smooth and calculating.

"Relax, Mark. Everything is under control. Besides, we can't back out now. You've invested too much."
