I went straight to Grey’s cabin. When he didn’t answer my knock, I opened the door and went inside. He wasn’t there.

Going back outside, I looked toward the woods, looking for any sign or scent of him. But there was none.

My disappointment was tinged with relief. Another argument with Grey was inevitable when I found him. I wasn’t as angry as I had been when Cyrus first told me. But I needed an explanation for his failure to disclose such an important fact.

I could stay silent and pretend everything was the same. But that would be dishonest, and I wanted better for our relationship. An omission of this size was the same as a lie.

Kicking off my sneakers, I walked barefoot through the grass back to the house. How I wished I could shift and run off these uncomfortable emotions. I craved that sensation of freedom and joy to soothe my mind. But I couldn’t.
