Chapter 25: Lone Walk

My heart raced as I speed walked down the long, curving driveway to the road. My whole body trembled during the first quarter mile of the trip toward town.

Just when I was calming down and beginning to enjoy the walk, a car approached from behind me. I fought the urge to dive into the trees alongside the road and then laughed at myself when the driver gave me a friendly wave as the car passed by.

I kept walking, determined to talk to my aunt to get some insight into Grey’s behavior and the things that had been happening since I moved to Denhurst. Thinking about Grey’s painful last words to me, I wiped away a tear and concentrated on the beautiful afternoon.

Before long, there was a smattering of small houses along the sides of the road. A small child on a tricycle stared at me as I walked past his home. I waved at him, but he let out a scream and ran into his house.

“I know how you feel, kid,” I said with a giggle. “The world is a scary place.”
