By six o’clock I was ready for my first dinner out with a man. I wore a lilac-colored summer dress with a knee length, twirly skirt and what Aunt Addie had called a sweetheart neckline and cap sleeves.

The kitten heel sandals on my feet made me feel feminine and alluring. And after Lily taught me how to apply nail polish, my fingers and toes were painted a matching shade of mauve.

After applying a little makeup to my face and slipping my mother’s gold hoop earrings in place, I thought I looked good enough to fit in with other people. When I went downstairs to the kitchen, Lily was standing by herself, peering through the patio door glass.
