Chapter 51

Many days Maya or Beatrice would be taken to one of the other sheds after they’d eaten and wouldn’t be returned until late in the night. Most times there were bruises or scrapes on parts of their bodies, but they never said anything about it. Cam knew what had gone on, but it was never talked about. The sound of tears in the darkness was the only comment.

She enjoyed the women she lived with. Rosa was a mother to everyone. She was older and seemed to have been here for years and knew everything about everyone. Maya was sullen but worked hard. She had left three small sons and she talked about them often.

Beatrice, on the other hand, had disappeared only days before her wedding. She worked slowly, without much enthusiasm and talked very little. Cam found every opportunity she could to talk with her or share the extra food.
