Chapter 50

“I am Rosa,” she introduced herself. “You must bring your mat over close to us. It is still cold at night.” She started to drag Cam’s pallet next to hers.

“Thank you,” Cam answered, helping Rosa move the mat. “I am Cameron.”

Rosa nodded. When she was certain that all four mats were fit into the space, she brushed her hands off against each other.

“Have you eaten today?” one of the younger women asked. She was about Lori’s age, not that much younger than Cam.

When Cam shook her head, she dug beneath a pile of clothes in the corner and produced a burlap sack. “This is all we have tonight,” she said apologetically. “We have no water until tomorrow.”

Cam looked into the sack. There was a hunk of bread and a small portion of dried meat.

“This is wonderful,” she said. “Thank you very much.” She put a piece of the bread in her mouth. It was a little stale but at least it was edible. The dried meat tasted good to her as she ground it between her teeth.
