Chapter 32

The weight of the handcuffs made her arms ache. It felt similar to the night when she and Nick Gardiner had to swim from the boat with one and a half million dollars in a briefcase handcuffed to her wrist. Looking back, she could laugh at some of the things she’d gone through. Maybe someday she’d look back at this and laugh, too. Somehow she doubted it.

Time wore on and slowly the darkness began to recede. It must be daybreak, she thought as she settled back for what was becoming a very long ride. Several times the van had stopped and she was allowed outside to relieve herself with an armed guard watching her every move. Twice, she was given something to eat but the food still sat in her stomach, her appetite long since gone away. The guard inside the van changed each time, too, but none were any more communicative than any other.
