Chapter 31

Now alone, in the darkened cell, Cam felt a terror and an anger that tore deep into her core. Her wail of rage could be heard throughout the lower recesses of the prison.

It was just past mid-afternoon when the phone rang. Lori looked at her husband and grandmother. Their faces all showed the strain and stress. But this call was too early. Maggie had said she’d call when it was over, but that wasn’t to be for another six or seven hours!

David lifted the receiver. “Yes?” His eyes widened as he heard the voice at the other end, Maggie’s voice, breathlessly say, “I have good news. Please put Lori on.” He handed the phone to his wife.

Lori listened to the phone for a brief moment, her face a mixture of wonderment and disbelief. She looked at her husband and grandmother. “The president…Ortega…has just announced that she won’t be executed. He’s decreed that her sentence be life in prison!”
