Chapter 14 [updated]

May Pov:

The sun has set. The school was over and It was finally Friday!

the thought of having two whole days to myself excited me.

But there's more to add to this exciting day, my parents are coming home!

They always arrive late so I wanted to stay awake to greet them, but I always end up sleeping.

But not this time. I was confident to see them today no matter how late it is. So I crawled onto my big, fluffy bed and opened up my laptop to finish that essay due next Wednesday. okay, the time is now half past 7. If I just finish this essay and eat dinner, they will come before midnight and then I can see them.

The reason I want to see them right away is that I love them so much.

You see, since I was a little girl, I always wanted to be a doctor. A doctor who can save several lives. But since both of my parents had promising careers in the fashion industry, people assumed I would want to become one as well. Because of that insecurity, I was afraid to tell them.

But years later, on my 13th birthday, I told them I didn't want to be a fashion designer or a model, but a doctor. and they were surprised but not upset or mad. On the contrary, they were happy for me.

'it's great you're following your dream dear, you should choose for yourself instead of letting others choose for you.' mom chanted.

'yes, and we always knew you had a knack for medical science. If you want, we can choose a good high school for you to work hard and get you a good job in the future.'

'thank you, mom and dad.' I clapped and hugged both of them tightly.

so I got enrolled in the Celestial Academy, moved into another private house here in Silenthill, where I live alone with Bertha and Lana, my two caretakers, and a couple of other workers, so not really alone.

So my parents aren't around much and I only get to see them once a month and then they are away quickly.

so I wanted to make them proud. I studied hard, got straight A's, always read a lot of books, and was curious to learn more. Moreover, I found a friend, since I don't communicate a lot with other people, even if they are fawning over me all the time, which is completely weird.

I remember the time they met Lily, they were happy I made a new friend and they had a good opinion of her.

I opened the small window to let some air in. it was already dark and all I can see is silhouettes of tall, standing trees.

This is a standalone house. There are no houses around. This is the only house bordering the forest. I can see the trees through my small window. I mostly keep it closed but sometimes, I look out the window and wonder what mysteries this forest holds.

'Mrs.May, dinner!' Bertha called.

I rushed downstairs and hustled down the narrow hall. There led to a big bright hall with a neat dining hall. it had one round table with a dish-cloth decorating the fancy furniture. A delicious aroma filled up the air.

I sat quietly waiting for it to be served. Lana came in with a silver cloche and placed the platter on the table.

'dinner is served, madam. Enjoy dear.' Lana gave a quirky smile.

The cooks serve the best dishes here. I don't have to worry about a thing, just about exams.

suddenly this reminded me of Lilith. She loves Bolognese. her sister used to make them. all I could hear was the cafe scene. her grieving at the funeral. Her crying at Beth and James kissing. her secrecy, her relationship with the new boy.

I know, that she's not okay at all.

'madam do you not like it?'

'oh mushroom bolognese, my favorite!' I blurted all of a sudden and started wolfing the dish down. Both of them exchanged confused looks.

'so, when are my parents coming?' I abruptly changed the subject.

'well, May, the thing is...' Bertha stammered.

Oh no, Bertha stammering is never a good sign.

'well, what is it?' I asked concerned.

'There had been some inconveniences caused so they will be not arriving any sooner.' Lana squeaked.

'What??' I stood up.

'I'm sorry they will not be arriving today they will arrive tomorrow afternoon.' she whispered.

I simply nodded and sat back down.

I was disappointed but It's just another day. I can manage that.

'it's just, they said this last time and didn't come at all' I dropped my head.

'it's alright Ms.May, they will come, there's nothing you need to worry about. I'm sure they will be here in no time.' Lana tried to convinve me and Lana gave an approving look.

'okay.' I slouched back and ate the rest of my dinner.

'Do you want dessert?' Bertha asked bringing out the big platter.

'of course, I do' I replied meekly.

It was Lili's favorite again, chocolate cake with whipped cream on top. I gobbled it up without saying a word.

The time is quarter past 10.

I looked out the window again. The air was gentle and moist and the forest looked dark and grim. Owls were hooting and I heard faint howls far away.

My phone suddenly rang. It was Lilith.

I answered it.

'hey, Lilii! had fun at detention?' I chuckled.

'haha, very funny.' she sounded tired and somewhat mad.

'well you were the one in search of your dark prince~' I teased.

'Wha-no, it's because of...y-you know, I WAS CURIOUS alright!'

I giggled. Talking to her makes me forget everything. She's a comfortable person.

'I heard Megan was there. How did that go.'

'We managed to avoid eye contact' she replied. I knew Lilith and she had history. She's like a walnut, not opening up and suddenly cracking under the pressure.

'welp! what about your parents?'

'well, they aren't coming today but they will tomorrow!'

'aww...someone wanted to stay up all night to meet their mommy and daddy but now they're gone, is the baby gonna cry?' she teased back.

'Oh shut up. K. Just wishing you good night, I'll text you tomorrow.' I was too tired to continue this conversation.

She was too so we decided to call it a night. I layed in bed in hopes of seeing them tomorrow. Last time they also postponed it but they never came.

It was time for bed so they turned off the lights.

It was pitch black. The world has gone silent. I closed my eyes in hopes of getting some sleep but today, I was strangely restless.

Must be because of the huge chunk of chocolate cake I munched down. The window was still open if they asked me to keep it closed. I shut my eyes tightly and laid face down on the pillow. I thought it would help me sleep but in vain.

Several hours passed, and if I'm being correct it was precisely midnight when I felt a bright light on my face. I couldn't ignore it. I sighed and roused from my slumber.

I sighed. It's hard enough to sleep already.

I shut the window and was about to close the curtains but I just noticed that this light is coming from the core of the forest and the colour was white with tints of blue. It shone even brighter than before, not allowing me to go to bed even I close the window.

I lay in bed but could not stop thinking about the light becoming brighter almost blinding me. It's so far away but so bright, like the sun. What if someone is calling for help? Or what if they are poachers and one of the animals are in danger?

whatever it is, I just can't ignore it. that's not how I'm raised.

But I'm not allowed to go in the forest and certainly not at this hour.

But the light, it's so tempting. It's almost like...

the light is calling for me.
