Ch-5: Fat Lamb

When Bai Chenyu stepped out of his house, he saw a crowd of disciples dressed in purple robes walking hurriedly toward the elder's residence. The only other elder in charge of the trial disciples was absent today because he had gone outside for a while. Elder Mu took this opportunity to summon the disciples who had not yet awakened their spiritual roots. If there was any talent among them, he would offer them to the Blood Sect. He couldn't touch the disciples who had already awakened their roots, as they were already under the watch of the Outer Sect Elders. If any of them disappeared, it would raise suspicion. If not for this, Bai Chenyu was sure that Su Yang would have met an early death.

"Hey, do you know why Elder Mu called all of us all of a sudden?"

"No, I have no clue."

"Oh, you guys are not informed, then why did you guys join the crowd?"

"Elder Mu told us to come to his place but did not say the reason and hurriedly left."

"Oh, it must have slipped his mind as he was in a hurry. Let me tell you that Elder Mu is going to check if any of us have awakened their spiritual roots yet and might take one of us as his personal disciple."

"Huh, there's such a good thing?"

"But I'd rather prefer to be a personal disciple of an Outer or maybe an inner sect elder."

"Hush, don't say it loudly. What if Elder Mu hears you and kicks you out of the sect? Besides, do you think everyone will be qualified to be promoted to the Outer Sect?"

"You are right."

Bai Chenyu shook his head as he listened to their conversation. Suddenly, he felt a tap on his shoulder, and he looked back.

Bai Chenyu saw an obese young man standing in front of him, with sweat trickling down his greasy face. He recognized the man as an acquaintance and a fellow trail disciple, Gu Wei. Whenever Gu Wei saw Bai Chenyu, he would give him jealous looks, leaving Bai Chenyu puzzled. He often wanted to ask, "Why the hell are you jealous of me? I have nothing to be jealous of, okay?"

"Bai Chenyu," Gu Wei said with a grin on his face, which made Bai Chenyu a bit cautious since it was the first time he saw him smiling at him.

"Gu Wei," Bai Chenyu greeted him with a small nod.

"Hahaha, Bai Chenyu, today my day finally came, and I'm going to take your spotlight," Gu Wei said with an arrogant smile while tapping Bai Chenyu's shoulder repeatedly. Bai Chenyu was puzzled, wondering what he was talking about.

"What are you talking about?" Bai Chenyu asked curiously, wanting to know the reason for Gu Wei's happiness.

"I have finally awakened my spiritual roots, and not just any roots but heavenly roots, even though I have no idea what kind of physique I awakened," Gu Wei announced to Bai Chenyu. There was no one near them, so only Bai Chenyu heard him, as everyone else was too excited about becoming Elder Mu's personal disciple.

Bai Chenyu looked with shock at Gu Wei, who was grinning happily and looking down at Bai Chenyu. It was very rare for someone to be born with a special physique, and Bai Chenyu was surprised that Gu Wei had awakened one. However, he soon had a look of sympathy, as it seemed Gu Wei was like a fat lamb, about to be sacrificed by Elder Mu. But Gu Wei's next words completely dumbfounded him.

"Finally, I will take Elder Mu's attention off you, who has been bootlicking to earn his favor and gain benefits in the future. Now, I will become his disciple and get all sorts of benefits that you were trying to gain from Elder Mu," Gu Wei said with a tinge of envy on his face, which quickly disappeared.

"Eh????!!!" Bai Chengy was completely dumbfounded when he heard Gu Wei's words, and his mouth hung open. He realized that Gu Wei had a misunderstanding; he thought that the extra work Bai Chenyu did was to curry favor with Elder Mu, when, in reality, it was Elder Mu torturing him with extra chores because he hates Bai Chenyu for his good looks. Bai Chenyu looked at the haughty fool and wanted to say" Brother if you want to do my chores, please do it" , but would not have said it because Elder Mu would make things more difficult for him 

"Haha, no need to be sad. I've seen your efforts. After I become his personal disciple, I'll share some resources with you," Gu Wei said in an arrogant tone while walking alongside Bai Chenyu.

Suddenly, Bai Chenyu remembered something from the novel. He recalled that after that, Elder Mu, who had been at the peak of the Mortal Ascension Realm, had suddenly broken through to the 12th Stage of the Core Formation Realm. He realized that Elder Mu must have presented this idiot in front of him to the Blood Sect, gaining many resources to improve his cultivation. Otherwise, even though Gu Wei was an idiot, he would have been a prominent character in the novel.

"Ah, yes, thank you. Please take care of me," Bai Chenyu said politely, and Gu Wei was very satisfied with his behavior. He patted his shoulder and walked away.

Bai Chenyu arrived in front of Elder Mu's residence and observed the crowd, which was engaged in chatter while waiting for Elder Mu's arrival.

"Hey, do you think any of us will get selected to be his personal disciple?" one disciple asked.

"It's not guaranteed. Even though some have awakened, they couldn't catch Elder Mu's eye as they weren't talented enough. No one has been lucky enough to be selected after so many gatherings," another replied.

"Yes, maybe someone today will get selected," a third one added.

Bai Chenyu, who knew the real reason from the novel why no one got selected, shook his head. In fact, many were selected, but they couldn't remember because Elder Mu had set up an array to alter their memory and make them believe that no one was chosen. The array was concealed, created by the main array master of the Blood Sect, and was difficult to detect. However, Bai Chenyu was prepared, as his system shielded his mind while concealing his awakened spiritual roots.

The crowd fell silent as they saw Elder Mu's arrival. His cold and indifferent expression heightened the disciples' anticipation.

"Alright, everyone, come to me one by one, and I will check whether you have awakened or not. Perhaps one of you will have the chance to become my personal disciple," Elder Mu declared, causing excitement among the disciples.

One by one, the disciples approached Elder Mu to be examined. Some had awakened but had either inferior or superior roots, which Elder Mu disregarded.

Then Bai Chenyu stepped forward, and Elder Mu grasped his wrist but found no traces of spiritual energy. His disappointment was evident as he couldn't sacrifice him yet. Bai Chenyu breathed a sigh of relief and rejoined the crowd, still feeling a bit nervous, even though he knew the system concealed his true roots.

When everyone had been examined, Gu Wei, the last one, approached Elder Mu with arrogant steps, raising an eyebrow from the elder.

"Heavenly roots and Qi! You've awakened a physique!" Elder Mu exclaimed loudly, his eyes turning bloodshot as he discovered Gu Wei's heavenly Qi.

"What kind of physique do you have? Do you know?" Gu Wei shook his head negatively.

"Haha, no problem. We can figure that out later. From today, you are my personal disciple," Elder Mu announced, and the crowd looked at him enviously. Not only had Gu Wei become Elder Mu's personal disciple, but he had also awakened a physique. They knew that his future would be limitless and started thinking of ways to curry favor with Gu Wei. Only Bai Chenyu looked at him with sympathy.

"Alright, we will depart from the sect immediately. I have a place where you can increase your cultivation," Elder Mu said, and the crowd looked at him with even more envy.

"Elder, I will go and gather my things," Gu Wei said with excitement, not expecting the elder to take him to a secret place to cultivate.

"No need. I will buy you some things on the way," Elder Mu replied hastily, eager to take Gu Wei to the Blood Sect and imagining the resources he could obtain. There was no way he would risk the sect discovering Gu Wei, who was like a ticket for him to rise in power.

"All right, Elder Mu," Gu Wei respectfully cupped his fist.

The two of them disappeared from the hall, with Elder Mu activating an array before leaving. A light covered all the disciples, but Bai Chenyu remained shielded by the system.

"It seems like no one got selected."

"Hah, just like all the previous times."

Once the light faded, the disciples had already forgotten about Gu Wei being selected. Bai Chenyu ignored them and returned to his residence to cultivate. He was not afraid of getting caught by Elder Mu, as he had left to return after a year. By then, he would have joined the Outer Court and perhaps even gained a master.
