Life in Vain: Jobless Reincarnation (Mushoku Tensei)

It was a freak accident. Someone ran the light at an intersection and before I knew it... my world turned black. But I didn't die then. Instead, I was forced to lament and regret over all of my failures. Lament about how this so-called genius was lower than dirt even at the very end. And that should have been it. After my consciousness faded, I should have disappeared. But I woke up. A different world, another life. A fresh start. This time, for sure...!

Author's Notes

New to Webnovel, but I've been writing seriously for a few years now.

This fanfic is basically a self-indulgent passion project. Like a lot of people, I'm sure, Mushoku Tensei was basically my gateway drug into the world of web novels and light novels. I followed it since it was initially being translated from start to finish, and while it had been a while since I finished reading it, I never forgot about it.

Time passed and I eventually fell into writing web novels myself. And then I recently learned that the Mushoku Tensei anime got released, and it is *glorious*.

As a result, I got the itch to revisit the story, but with my own spin on things.

Rudy here is similar but different to Rudy in canon. He's similar in that his siblings didn't like him and he was a failure to his parents for a long time. But he's different in that he turned his life around before his parents passed away. Well, he started to turn his life around. But before he could celebrate it and make it up to his family, he was caught in a freak car accident on the way to a Christmas party and died.

If you're looking for a quick power trip and different plot from the get go, this story isn't for you.

My favorite parts of Mushoku Tensei and the portions that stuck out to me was always how heavily flawed characters grew and developed throughout the story in the face of adversity and challenges. I'm not confident in pulling that off completely, but I am confident in the ability to show the gradual passage of time and portray the characters' lives as they interact with each other.

In short, if you're looking for a story with slice of life and how time passes on to change people, I hope that you give this story a chance and that you enjoy it.

Whatever the case, thank you for reading this and best wishes to you.

Edit: January 12, 2022 - I forgot to mention that this is a repost of my story from another site, so don't expect multichapter dumps as the norm, ahaha. As much as I wish I could do that, there's only one me and only so much time in the day.

P.S. I'm going off the completed web novel for source material mostly, so some things may be different from Anime, such as names.
