Just Focus On Me

Set in the late 1950s, Just Focus On Me is a poignant queer tale inspired by beloved titles such as Nana, Banana Fish, Heartstopper, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, and Fellow Travelers. Through the journals of Victoria Payne and Jane Myers, we follow their journey alongside their friends as they navigate the complexities of love and self-acceptance.
Amid societal expectations and the weight of religious trauma, Victoria and Jane must confront their feelings for each other while grappling with the pressures of conformity. As they explore the true meaning of love, they learn to embrace their identities and support one another in a world that often feels hostile, discovering that that love is not just about romance; it's about friendship, acceptance, and the courage to be true to oneself.

Chapter 11: New People

September 29th, 1956

Los Angeles, CA

Today was... peculiar... to say the least? Class began, and Priscilla was here. So she wasn't sick? Just what was that girl doing yesterday? As always, Jane ran off with us before Tom could tell her otherwise. We got to the flower field and sat down."Where were you yesterday? Overslept dreaming about Prince Charming?" I asked, sarcastically.

"Well... actually, yes!!!" Priscilla said, no hint of shame.

"What!?" I exclaimed.

Jane and Priscilla began to laugh.

"Your mother didn't wake you up?" Jane asked.

"My mama was also oversleepin', and my papa was already at work! So we both overslept! And by the time we woke up, it was already too late! Although... I got scolded... but it's not my fault!!! She overslept too!"

"Of course you did..." I responded back.Jane and I laughed as Priscilla pouted.Just then, the boys' coach approached us.

"Hey, girls, would you mind fetching us a ball from the shed over there? Thanks," he asked.

We agreed and went over to retrieve a ball for him... when we opened the shed, we all saw a sight that made me want to put bleach in my eyes! The school's hunk, the football team's captain, the one the girls desired most, Troy Thompson, was kissing some random pansy-looking dude!? Oh hell no! Gross!

Jane let out a loud scream, and the twinky-looking guy pushed Troy off of him in shock and embarrassment. Priscilla sat there with her jaw dropped. I was... unpleased at this sight. I mean, I don't care if they're homosexuals; I just don't want to see anyone kiss. Nasty!Jane looked as if she was about to pass out. Oh, Jane, darling... I hate to break it to you... homosexuals exist... and I'm one for you. That was a joke, by the way... kind of... maybe.Troy and that kid stared at us like deer in headlights, and we did the same. After a good 20 seconds of us staring at each other and Jane looking like she was genuinely not okay, Troy spoke up, "Ladies, let's talk this out—" He tried to say in a "charming" voice as he brushed his hands through his hair. That other boy got mad and yelled at him, "What the hell is wrong with you!?" He turned away from Troy and spoke to us in a challenging tone, "You three... you better not say a single WORD about this to anyone, am I clear? ESPECIALLY you, Priscilla, miss little knows everyone! And what's up with your friend there!? She's never seen two men kiss? Why'd she scream SO loud?" He gave Jane a snarky look.

"She's a church girl, cut her some slack," I said sarcastically. "And wait... Priscilla, you know him?"

The kid responded back with, "Doesn't she know everyone?"

I sighed. "She really does, doesn't she?"

Priscilla got over her initial surprise and was now trying not to laugh.

"Anyways... have fun kissing, I guess..." I said, filled with irritation.

"Haha! This girl's funny, I like her!" Troy said.

"I couldn't say the same about you," I retorted.

Whatever his name was, the one caught making out with Troy, snickered. What a good boyfriend, laughing at his lover getting made fun of by some dyke.We took what we came for and walked back. Did they not care that we just found out about them? Oh well, I guess after a certain time you give up on caring about what others think of your identity, or at least not caring as much if they did find out. I can't tell why I feel strangely satisfied by this outcome... I mean, I didn't want to see them kiss; that's just nasty... but it feels nice to know there are other kids like me here, even one I would never expect, Troy Thompson.Jane still looked pale and was clinging onto me, almost as if hiding.

"Jane, you alright there?"

"I... I just can't believe what we saw," she stammered. "Is that even normal? I-Is that even legal? I should repent now for even laying my eyes on such a thing!"

"Oh, Jane... unfortunately, homosexuals are very much real and apparently are having secret make-out sessions in the school shed," I said half-jokingly, hoping she wouldn't be as... scared if I made a joke.

"I mean, I don't really care who likes who! I think it's all the same at the end of the day. It's just pretty funny seeing Tori and Dante meet! I always wondered what would happen if they met!" Priscilla said, snickering. Jane still looked horrified.

"So his name is Dante? Ugh... is he always that sassy?"

Priscilla laughed, "Yup! That's Dante Williams for ya! There was this one time a girl told him, 'I heard you're a pansy,' and he said, 'So what if I am? I mean, more boys like me than they ever will you... and you should really find some cuter earrings... yours look like if a circus performer had to wear traffic cones for earrings.' The girl was flabbergasted!"

Priscilla laughed, and I rolled my eyes. At least someone was confident... good for him.
