Chapter 84

As soon as they were inside and had shed their coats, they went into the kitchen. As usual, there were leftovers from dinner. Miss Gina reheated them, then they sat down to eat.

“Now I don’t want to be a busybody, or stick my nose in where it doesn’t belong,” she said a few minutes later, “but I need to know. Are the two of you working on being more than friends?” She looked specifically at Ryan when she asked. He was aware Shaun was watching him, too, waiting for his answer.

“Perhaps,” Ryan replied. “I’m trying to get used to the fact I can even consider it. A month ago, I’d have laughed…No, not laughed, because it’s not a laughing matter. I’d have said it could never happen. That I’d never be able to trust any man’s words, or actions, on a personal level. I did with Merrick and he took advantage of it, and me. I’m never going to let it happen again.”
