“Well, well. Look who’s here. The big shot artist,” John said. It was evident from the grin on his face he was teasing, not jealous.

“You’re not doing too badly yourself,” Ryan replied. “Five paintings—” he gestured to the side wall of the gallery, “—and four marked as sold.”

“Yep. I’m not complaining. Are you busy right now? If not, do you want to stop for coffee and play catch-up, after I pick up my money?”

Ryan checked the time. It was only five and Merrick wasn’t due home until six. “Sure.” He wandered around the gallery while John went in to talk to Mr. Foster. A few minutes later, they were across the street at a local coffeehouse.

“So, other than having your own show, how’s life treating you?” John asked once they had coffee and a table. “Still seeing that good-looking guy you were with at our show?”

“I am. We’re living together.”

“Whoa. Seriously? That’s fantastic.” John studied him over the rim of his cup. “You look happy.”
