“I think stew’s better the second time around, anyway,” Ryan said.

“I agree. Now, let’s see what you did today.”

They spent the time while the stew warmed up going through pages and pages of sketches Ryan had made.

“Look at this guy,” Ryan said at one point, tapping what looked like a completed drawing, not a casual sketch.

Merrick felt a twinge of jealousy. He must have spent a lot of time with him. Is he interested in him? Is that why he was late? “He’s beautiful,” he said aloud. “In spite of the fact that he looks like he hasn’t had a bath in a week.”

Ryan nodded. “It was his eyes that first caught my attention. So full of pain, and yet hope. If I can capture those emotions when I turn this into a final drawing, I’ll feel as if I’ve accomplished something.”

“You’re so good, I’m sure you will.”
