Chapter 68: Go With The Flow

Walking out of the Uchiha Compound together, Warai looked at Kannin to her left, and asked,

"So what do you want to talk about, Kannin?"

Kannin's nerves were about to explode at this point, but the die had been cast, and he knew he couldn't turn back now. Warai could tell by looking at his chakra with her Sharingan that Kannin was really disturbed. In fact, if she didn't know better, she'd probably think he was under some genjutsu by the fluctuations in his usually calm chakra.

After trying and failing come up with the right words for a minute or so, Kannin looked at Warai and said,

"Could you put me under a genjutsu to calm me down?"

Warai already had an idea of where this was going, and had to hold back laughter after hearing Kannin's request.

'He's probably the strongest of us three, but so weak in other ways...' She thought with an amused smile

"Sure," She said, "look me in the eyes real quick."

When Kannin looked at her eyes, he suddenly felt relaxed and resolved, like was on a mission again, with clear directives and goals. He centered himself again.

"Thanks"

"So," Warai, again with a smirk, said, "I'll ask again: what do you want to talk about?"

Kannin looked at her and said point blank, with a flat, robotic tone:

"Do you want to go on a date with me?"

Hearing the deadpan delivery of the line tickled something for Warai and she let out a laugh.

Seeing this worried Kannin, and he quickly asked "Did I do something wrong?"

"No," she said smiling, "I just think the genjutsu is working a little too well. You sounded like a robot." She paused for a moment before asking, "So what made you ask me?"

Kannin looked at her confused, and said with little emotion, "Is that a trick question? I feel like it's obvious."

"I mean why now, idiot."

"Well," Kannin said, "I guess now that the war's over we actually have time for that kind of thing and there's no real reason not to..." Looking at Warai, he asked, "So? What about it?"

Again hearing the deadpan delivery, Warai couldn't help but laugh.

"I ought to cancel the genjutsu before I answer, shouldn't I?" She focused her eyes for a moment, muttering "Cancel!"

Kannin felt a cold sensation trickle down his body, like someone was pouring ice-water on his head--and suddenly, all of that anxiety welled back up and beads of sweat began to form on his forehead.

"So?"

Warai smiled for a moment before saying,

"I think a date would be nice"

2 days before Minato's hooding, he was receiving instruction from Hiruzen on the minutiae of the office.

"Here's the secret button that opens a chute for trash, here's how to instantly summon your anbu, here's..." He said, listing off all of the (often pointlessly) secret and important little things the Hokage needs to know.

"You really know this place well, Hiruzen" Minato said.

"I better," Hiruzen chuckled, "I basically built the place."

That comment caused Minato to raise an eyebrow. Seeing his curiosity, Hiruzen explained, his eyes staring into the air,

"Hashirama wasn't Hokage for long before he died..." he paused, remembering those times, "Tobirama wasn't much different. He was Hokage during the First War, and perished in it; so, despite reigning over two different wars, I'm the Hokage who's seen Konoha at peace the most. I hope some day that will change with you, Minato."

"It's my hope that we won't need to worry about war any time soon, Lord Third."

"Well then," Hiruzen said with a smile, "it seems like there's little more for me to do, Lord Fourth."

Looking at the desk and chair, as well as the cloak and hood hanging on the door, Minato's chest welled up with pride.

"Thank you, Hiruzen."

"I should be thanking you, Minato." Hiruzen said, "I needed retirement anyway."

Kannin and Warai had just parted ways after agreeing to get dinner the day after Minato was hooded, and Kannin, heart still beating at a hundred miles an hour, was beaming all the way home. Passing the shops and pedestrians, Kannin was whistling, and had a particular skip in his step that a number of onlookers didn't fail to notice.

'Hehehe...' Kannin hadn't been this happy in his entire life.

Walking through the door to his house, Usagi heard the strangest noise--Kannin was whistling.

"I'm home!" He said in a sing-song voice

"Did someone put a genjutsu on you?" She asked, "I've never heard you whistle in your entire life."

"...I guess I'm just in a good mood--war being over in all."

Usagi took a moment to think, before saying, "Who is it?"

The whistling stopped suddenly, and so did his footsteps.

'Knew it' Usagi thought with a smirk

"H-how'd you know?!"

"Kids only get that giddy when they've either got a date or a new toy. I don't think you've gotten any new weapons, so that left only one thing. Moms just know these things."

"Ughhh" Kannin sighed

"So," Usagi urged, "who is it?"

"Warai"

Usagi laughed a little, "Of course it's Warai!"

"Whaddaya mean 'Of course?!'" Kannin groaned

"Come on," she said with a chuckle, "you've been making eyes at her since you were 6."

"No I haven't!" he objected.

"I'm just telling the truth here, kiddo."

"Ugh, fine." Kannin said, stomping up to his room.

That night Kannin couldn't sleep at all. He was too excited and nervous, he only got some rest after the adrenaline wore off and he passed out from exhaustion.

When he woke up, he saw the sun rise over the horizon through his bedroom window, lighting up his room. His room, which he had been in his whole life, was getting old. The pale blue paint was cracking in a number of spots, his bead was creaky and uneven, and he could tell there were bugs in his closet that could kill a grown man with a single bite.

'Maybe I should move out, now that I'm a jonin and all...' he thought to himself.
