Aldan was initially shocked by the power that was packed in these bolts. With his vast knowledge of magic, he could easily determine these bolts were of a high-level spell twisted with the energy of death. Furthermore, from that instantaneous attack, he also analyzed there could only be around ten people underground who would have access to have such a spell.
Aldan thought it was a shame he couldn't get a proper look. But he was ready now, all eyes, most importantly his eyes, were locked at where the attack came from. His sharp eyes would see the slightest fluctuation in the magic around the location.
"Could you be the Grand Duke of Leyrnwar?" Aldan spoke with a morbid smile spreading ear to ear. His lizard-like skin stretched and made him look even more like a lizardman.
"There are only three people who could be close enough to appear at this location who would have access to such magic," Aldan added. He was confident of himself enough to figure out who this mysterious person was. He gazed at the masses around and in front of him and sighed, none of these creatures had any worth compared to his advanced intellect.
No other response came from behind the trees. Even though the forest boasted thick trees, a high number of trees had already been destroyed or felled by the demons on the battlefield. If he came forward, he would surely be seen. At least enough for Aldan to figure out the identity of the spellcaster.
"Your wizard friend has abandoned you, it seems," Aldan chortled as he turned to face Kai again. "I had never played with an undead with a mind before, I will see whether you feel any pain when I slowly break you."
Kai would laugh if he wasn't so beaten down already. He slowly spoke the words "Light of Death" and within the blink of an eye, the entire battlefield and more was covered in a black carpet of death energy. Dozens of undead creatures of all types started getting up and rushing at Aldan and his army from all sides.
Powering such a large number of undead with such a taxing skill would normally kill a regular necromancer and Kai had also felt an unbelievable fatigue wash over him. However, he didn't actually have a physical body to get tired. He couldn't die just because he used too much power.
Gort had warned him back then, but Kai realised that simply powering through these moments were enough to overcome them.
Since Kai was running around the locations with the highest number of corpses, his corpses were everywhere.
Even mid-tier demons found themselves hard-pressed to fight against such a high number of undead creatures boosted by a high-level necromancy spell. As the zombies hit the left flank of Aldan's small army, Kai followed and raised the fallen soldiers before they could hit the ground.
Incubus Commanders wanted to quickly take control of the situation, but they were ordered by Aldan to escort him to safety right away. As cruel or intelligent as he may be, he wasn't an experienced commander. Kai's attack had worked as an excellent use of a shock and awe attack.
"That's right, run away with your tail between your legs!" Kai shouted from behind him.
Hearing this, Aldan's fear vanished, replaced by an untamable rage.
"Scholar Aldan, we must leave as per your orders," one of the Incubus Commanders spoke between his gritted teeth, he was indignant.
"Yes, we will," Aldan turned to the incubus who spoke and gave him his orders, "You will stand behind and bring back this impudent creature to the camp."
The other Incubus Commander tried to protest, but he was quickly shut down by Aldan. "Don't come back without accomplishing your mission."
"Understood."
Albeit coming from the same origins, male members of these demons were named Incubi, while the female demons were named Succubi. While the latter always had high-tier blood, it was very rare for an incubus to reach such a level.
Incubi were thus shunned within their own households albeit boasting the same red colour as the succubi, only being the servants of the latter. Then again, the fact was that their blood was still higher calibre than mid-tier demons and they boasted a lot more strength.
That's why even if they lived as servants, they took to battlefields in one form or another. At least they could gain some sort of reputation through battle merits. That's why being given the chance to distinguish himself in battle was something they would never say 'no' to.
Even a single Incubus Commander was already enough to safely escort Aldan back without much trouble. The incubus managed to open up a path through the waves of zombies quite easily with his power.
"I am called Viragin," the incubus who stayed behind spoke with utter confidence as he drew a halberd behind his back.
Kai whispered a few words and zombified senior forest spirits also jumped from behind and attacked the incubus with extreme savagery. They were far faster and far stronger than the average zombie. The stronger the vessel, the more powerful the undead would be, after all.
More undead he controlled, more sure of himself he became. He had intended his creatures to be a surprise for the end of the battle, but it was better than being battered and dragged back by these demons.
Almost as if he had eyes on his back, Viragin swung his halberd enough to split the senior spirit's face. Even with a split face, however, the zombified beast kept coming at him.
"Stubborn pest," Viragin spat out and turned to Kai instead. Even though Kai was an undead creature, too, it didn't matter in the end. If he took out the necromancer controlling them, he wouldn't have to deal with these anymore.
Even though Kai expected this, he was still severely outmatched due to Viragin's weapon mastery. Even senior forest spirits were unable to keep up with him in a zombified form.
Whenever Kai tried to get close to him, Viragin would hit him with either end of his weapon, all the while dodging and pushing back other undead creatures. Weaker zombies couldn't even slow him down.
Kai finally decided to risk it and jumped at Viragin. Even if he was to be damaged during his attack, it would be worth it if he was able to kill him with his poisonous body.
"Foolish greenhorn," Viragin commented and decided to put some distance by kicking Kai away with his heel. As his halberd danced circles in the air, it hit Kai one after another, not allowing him to get close at all.
Viragin spoke again with confidence.
"I may not be the most powerful of us, but I am one opponent you can never hope to-"
Before he could finish his words, his halberd suddenly flew away. Viragin looked at his halberd in a puzzled expression, his eyes asking how such a thing could happen. Even Kai had stopped his attack due to his shock.
Behind Viragin, was a dog-eared and bushy-haired man laden in black clothes. His deep blue eyes looked straight into Kai's and gave him a pause. He pulled out his dagger from behind Viragin. None of them had seen when the dagger had gone in, but only realised when it came out.
"Take care of the kid," the man said and disappeared before Kai's zombies could close the distance and attack him.
Kai could barely find any words to speak.
"Who the f- Nevermind that," Kai corrected himself. He ordered his zombies to stand down moments after so that they wouldn't destroy the corpse.
It didn't matter who the man was right now, Kai was grateful to him.
"Summon Undead."
