Chapter 24

“I am not doing this because I expect repayment. It is just the right thing to do, that’s all. I happen to be someone who may actually be able to help you, rather than just a tourist who gives you a little money and wishes you good luck.”

He was still holding on to my hand, squeezing a little tighter now. And still looking directly into my eyes.

“When is your last day in your apartment?” I asked, hoping to bring him back to reality.

“Friday.”

“Then here is what we will do. We will meet here at this coffee shop in the evening, after your boss has gone home. I will carry your backpack or whatever you have back to the hotel. If you have more than that, I’m sure my friend Margaux will help me. That way no one in the hotel will see you entering with your things, and no suspicion will be aroused. Then I will let you in through a back door.”

“But where will I sleep? You have just one room, one bed.”

“Actually, there are two beds. And a sofa.”
