I Am The Rival

Stories revolve around characters. Over the lifetime of the story many characters are introduced and discarded. But there is one character that ultimately controls the flow of a story.. The Protagonist. Yet in most stories there is a character that is set up as the protagonist's equal.. a character who is presented as just as important as the protagonist but overtime is reduced to a side character, a villain or a corpse... What would happen if a guy from our world enters into the body of one such character.. into the body of the one less favored.. into the body of the rival?

It was a cold winter day. The sun hid behind the clouds and the streets were mostly empty.

I was returning home from my office. "I need to buy some food before I head home." I looked at the store nearby and entered it.

The familiar sound of the bells at the door ringing was heard. The sight before me was not familiar though.

The cashier was currently held at gunpoint by what looked like a robber. The man looked like a drug addict.

As soon as he saw me, he pointed his gun at me. "Don't move." He shouted.

I quickly threw my hands up. He then turned his attention back to the cashier. Occasionally glancing in my directions.

'What do I do?' I tried to stay calm but I couldn't. After the cashier finished handing over all the money he quickly took it and rushed out.

But… *Bang* the sound of a gunshot was fired. Killing the standing cashier.

Then he turned towards me. The sight of a murder just happened before me. I couldn't process it. "Leave no witnesses." He muttered as he shot the gun.

*Bang*

I could feel the heat of the bullet on my chest as my knees got weak. Kneeling on the ground I tried to keep my consciousness but,

*Bang*

A second shot was fired this time straight through my head. The world around me blurred as I lost my senses.

'So, that's it… Just like that…' I tried to keep my consciousness. I didn't want to die. I had what I wanted: a well paying job, a nice house inherited from my parents… Well on second thought I was missing a wife but still I was just 24, Dammit.

They were my final thoughts, as my consciousness broke apart.

"Where am I?" I opened my eyes.

It was an unfamiliar ceiling. It looked luxurious. I walked out of the comfortable bed and looked around the room. It was neatly organized. The room was clean and looked like it came from Victorian London.

I finally found a mirror.

It wasn't me. The figure in the mirror looked younger, about 8 years younger than myself. The boy had auburn hair that reached up to his nape similarly colored eyes. He had fair white skin. Overall he looked like a model.

Yet this character looked familiar. I wondered where I had seen this face before. Wait.

I looked at the back of my palm. A small scar that clearly showed itself in my fair hand was visible.

I couldn't believe it. I took a deep breath, closed my eyes and tried to feel my heartbeat. I could feel a bit of warmth in my heart. I then imagined an orb forming in my hand. I felt a bit of heat radiating above my palm that I had faced upwards.

I opened my eyes to look at the orb that had now formed above my hand. It was made purely from magma and was radiating a lot of heat yet I was barely affected. This confirmed my suspicions.

I was inside a fictional world. The one from the novel I was reading. Now I wasn't the main character, not the main villain, not even a side villain, and yes I wasn't a nameless extra either.

"Zach Nyle"

He (I) was the rival character. The type of character who competes with the protagonist in the first half and gets turned into the protagonist's bitch, a villain or killed at the end of the academy arc.

As for Zach, he would be killed at the end of the academy arc.

But it isn't that bad, because like every rival character he is talented, handsome and not to mention filthy rich.

Did I replace his conscience? Or did I simply regain my memory now? Was I always Zach? Or was I… I can't remember my name.

Strange.. I am accepting this way too easily. Guess transmigration was actually real. Now the world i currently was in was a fantasy world divided into four regions the region i was currently in was the "Republic" A state at western part of the continent.

It was ruled by a group rather than a single individual. This group of influential and powerful people was called the "Union"

~~~Scene Break~~~
I entered through the fancy looking gate, I was greeted with a well kept garden with a fountain right in the middle. Behind the fountain was a huge mansion that looked like it came from a fantasy world.
'Perks of being rich.' I entered through the door the white marble floor that was highly maintained and spotless while the hall was illuminated with countless beautiful lights.
I walked through the luxurious hallway trying my best not to be suspicious. After a few moments I was in front of a large door. Taking a huge breath I opened the door.
"Good morning father." I greeted.
A man with a rather large beard sat behind a table.
"I wonder." He said his voice carried authority yet was calm and clear. "Why has my son come to visit me when he should be preparing?"
"Uh.. well I wanted to ask for your permission for something. I want to visit the abandoned mines of our territory." I said.
"You don't have to take permission for such trivial matters." He said.
"I want to go alone." I finished my sentence.
He looked at me dead in the eyes. "Why?"
"I have something I want to do there. Something I can't disclose even to you." I said.
The man sighed. "Fine but you have to return before the entrance ceremony."
"I will." I said.
Well hi.
