Outside of the Gotham city Opera house, a family of three leave through a side door and enter into one of the infinite dark and shady alleys that plague the infamous city of crime.

The mother, father, and even the young 10-year-old son were all dressed to impress in what seemed to be very expensive clothing. The father and son wearing tuxedos, while the beautiful mother is dressed in an eye-catching red dress, accompanied by all sorts of jewelry that would be impossible to afford for even the moderately rich.

Some might find it confusing to see such well-dressed and wealthy people in a shady alley, but this is just the way Gotham is. Even the most well-off area that boasts a fancy upscale Opera house isn't safe from the sketchy atmosphere that is Gotham City.

"Thomas, are you sure it's safe to leave through the side door?" The mother asks as the door closes behind them. "You know I don't like going into the city without security."

The mother understands Gotham for what it is. A city of crime.

She knows how dangerous these types of places are. Especially towards fattened prey like themselves.

"It's fine Mom, let's just go home already." The boy said with a small frown on his face.

He just had the displeasure of sitting through the opera and wanted nothing more than to go home and play Super Mario World on his Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES).

Not only does he want to play his video games, but the boy also wants out of this penguin suit his mother insisted he wears.

"You heard the boy, Martha." Thomas pats his son's head fondly and points towards the door they just left from. "Besides, the door doesn't seem to have a handle on the outside, so I guess we're stuck."

"Oh, dear..." The now named Martha mutters as she turns to eye the dark alley around them warily.

The two men don't seem to share her concern as they just look at each other and simply shrug.

"It's okay, Marth." Thomas tries his best to wash away his wife's concerns. "Alfred should be parked upfront. We just have to walk a bit to get there."

The name Alfred does placate her concerns slightly.

After all, she was the one that hired him as the family butler, so she understood his skill set best.

As a former military man, Alfred Thaddeus Crane Pennyworth, or simply Alfred was the main protection they employed whilst leaving home.

If he's ever asked, Alfred would always downplay his role in the military, but he was a very accomplished and high ranking soldier in both the British Special Air Service(SAS) and the Special Boat Service(SBS), which is pretty much the British equivalent of the Americans Navy Seals.

Sadly for them, although Alfred's name does calm the situation slightly, they still have to make a small trip through this alley to get to the safety that is Alfred.

Without another word the family of three starts making the trek towards the front of the Opera house.

All along the way, Martha was cursing her idea to attend the Opera in the first place.

What was she thinking?

She knew the city wasn't safe, but she and her family couldn't just live in the confines of their Manor forever. Although it had everything they needed, human beings need interaction and even the smallest adventure to enjoy life.

While Martha was having her inner monologue about never leaving the house again, the family of three almost made it out of the alley without a problem.

Almost.

Suddenly, a man with a newsboy cap jumps out from behind a big green dumpster where he seemed to be laying in wait.

"Ah ah ah, where do you think you're going?" The called man says as he pulls a snub-nosed revolver from his jacket pocket and points it at the unsuspecting family. "Now keep quiet and hand over your money and jewelry."

The family freeze out of shock and horror as the gun was pointed straight at them.

They heard what the man demanded but found the situation hard to compute for a moment and just stood there with dumb expressions.

"Are you idiots deaf or something? Hand over the money and jewelry or the kid gets it first!" He says as the gun is turned towards the shortest of the group.

*click*

Showing that he isn't playing around, the robber uses his thumb to pull the hammer of the revolver back, clicking it into place.

The first to come back to reality was Martha. Her motherly instincts kicked in as her baby was in danger.

Without the slightest delay, she stepped in front of her son, shielding him from the gun.

Looking at her shocked husband, Martha slapped him on the chest, waking Thomas from his stupor.

"Listen to the man and get the money out!" Martha says as she throws her purse to the mugger, not caring for anything inside.

Possessions can be replaced easily. Her son and husband can't.

"Oh ah... Yeah!" Thomas 'eloquently' says as he reaches for his wallet.

"Yeah is right! If you want to get outa this alive, you better be quick about it. I'm not interested in killing, just the money and jewelry are all I need." The capped man says as he swings the gun around violently.

When Thomas got his wallet out, he copied his wife and simply threw it toward the gunmen alongside his wedding ring.

IDs and other things can be reaquired with a little effort. Although it's going to be annoying to deal with, Tom would rather not anger the man with a gun pointed at him and his family over some time in line at the DMV.

While Thomas was handing over his share, Martha was taking off all of her jewelry and boy was she regretting wearing so much of it tonight.

The rings and earrings were easy but the bracelets all had little clasps that were always finicky to deal with.

As she was dealing with the annoyance of her jewelry, the gunmen started to get impatient.

"Come on hurry up!" He exclaims as he jabs his gun forward menacingly.

"I-I'm trying. The latch is stuck..." Martha says as she finally gets her last bracelet off and throws it to the gunmen.

"The necklace too!" He shouted angrily.

Thankfully, the necklace came off smoothly and was thrown in the pile of loot along with everything else.

"That's it? Nothing else, right!?" The mugger says menacingly and uses his free hand to grab everything off the floor, not forgetting to keep the gun aimed at the family of three.

"No, that's everything." Thomas says hurriedly, wishing to end this as quickly as possible. "May we leave?"

"Yeah, go ahead." He nods and steps aside, gesturing with his gun for them to move along.

Thomas and Martha don't hesitate for a moment and start fast walking towards the end of the alley, pulling their son with them along the way.

*Bang Bang*

In an instant, as the family was getting further and further away, gunshots were heard and Thomas fell to the floor like a puppet without strings.

"!" Martha turned as she heard the gunshots and saw her husband on the floor with two bloody holes in the back of his head.

He was dead already. Probably dead before he even hit the floor.

Before she had any time to think, the gunmen aimed the smoking barrel of the revolver at her next.

"W-We gave you everything you asked for. W-Why?"
