Chapter 14

OSWALD

THE CLOCK INCHED CLOSER to 8 a.m., and I paced the living room waiting to see if Lydia would make an appearance. We left things unsettled the day before, so I didn't know if she would show or not. After my father walked in on us, he'd been shocked to find Lydia held in my arms and not some nameless nanny.

He tried kicking her out of my home. He told her he would tell her mother, like we were teenagers caught making out in her bedroom and not the grown adults who didn't care what her mother thought. I should have stuck up for her and argued back, but I was in such a daze from our kiss, the emotions she conjured deep inside me, and the sudden intrusion of my father.

Plus his reminder of who she was.

Lydia wasn't only a nanny the agency sent to help for a day. She was so much more.

My step-sister.
