The five of them wrestled together, cries of distress filling the air, making it impossible to distinguish whose tears and sweat were whose.
Just then, Filch's voice came over from nearby.
"Who's there?!"
Hearing this, the five of them stared wide-eyed, and Harry quickly pulled his hand away from Malfoy's mouth and stumbled to his feet.
"Ron! Neville, run! Filch is coming!"
At that moment, Malfoy forgot about bothering Harry and pushed open the big door, rushing outside.
The two groups split, one running upstairs and the other downstairs. Filch shouted,
"Stop running! I've seen your faces! Hurry up and stop, and I'll consider leniency!"
None of them listened to him. Filch hesitated for a moment before pursuing them upstairs.
The ones heading down were either Slytherins or Hufflepuffs; the dungeons were too close, and he feared they'd reach the common room before he caught up. However, if he went to the tower, the path would be longer.
Harry and his friends knew Filch was coming for them, so they focused on moving ahead and quickly ducked into a random classroom.
Just when they thought they caught a break, they unexpectedly stumbled upon Peeves the Poltergeist.
At that moment, Peeves was scribbling all over the blackboard and, upon seeing the three little wizards, he excitedly threw his chalk aside.
"Look what I see! Three first-year mischief-makers who aren't in bed!"
"Please," Harry pleaded, "Filch is looking for us. Keep it down."
"This is for your own good, you know? If I go tell Filch, do you know what punishment you'll face?" Peeves teased.
"Go away!" Ron angrily shoved him aside, which only added to their troubles.
"Students not in bed!" Peeves shouted, trying to draw Filch over. The three of them dashed out of the classroom, running wildly and crashing into a door.
"It's over!" Ron exclaimed. "This door is locked!"
"What spell do you know? Open it!"
"The Unlocking Charm, but I can't do it."
The footsteps were getting closer, compounded by Peeves' loud racket, making Harry and his friends feel increasingly frightened and desperate.
Neville was already imagining what he would do after being expelled. Gardening at home didn't seem too bad.
Unwilling to give up, Ron frantically twisted the doorknob, trying to force the door open.
With a click, the door surprisingly swung open.
"Quick, get in!"
Harry shouted, and the three of them rushed inside, only to hear a resigned voice.
"I tell you, if you're going to sneak out, at least don't make such a commotion. Are you trying to wake the professors?"
"No, we were just…" Harry instinctively started to reply, then realized the issue.
Why was there someone here?
And that voice sounded so familiar!
"Wyn? What are you doing here?"
"Can't sleep at night, so I came out for a walk." Wayne stepped out of the darkness, and the three of them gaped in surprise—not because of Ron, but because...
"Wayne! Watch out, behind you!"
Three enormous creatures were glaring at them from behind Wayne.
Neville looked like he was about to lose it.
"Don't worry, we've had enough activity for today."
Wayne snapped his fingers, and suddenly the surroundings lit up.
He looked at the three clueless friends with a bemused expression. They hadn't even learned the unlocking charm.
Without Hermione, it turned out they were two useless men...
