“Is this a type grass horses will eat?” Dakota asked. When both horsemen nodded, the colonel directed the grass to be dug up carefully to preserve the roots.

“Let’s hope it grows fast enough to feed your horses before it’s too late.”

As predicted, the return took longer than the trip down. They left the crash well before sunset and only proceeded as far north as their campsite of the night before. It was another two full days to reach the Norman colony, which they found deserted.

“What the hell?” the colonel snarled. They scattered out in the growing gloom, searching for clues to the colonists’ disappearance.

“It seems they just packed up and left, sir,” a soldier said.

“The well head has been removed, also,” a second soldier said, returning from his investigation.
