Chapter 193: A Wand Core from a Strand of Hair?

For Murphy, the so-called project wasn't of much importance.

What could a group of first and second-year young wizards possibly research?

The main goal was to make them learn the general approach and method of conducting research, maintaining their curiosity and thinking ability, and preventing them from becoming as rigid as adult wizards.

Additionally, it was a chance to strengthen teamwork, allowing Harry's group more opportunities to gather openly.

As expected, after class, Harry's group didn't leave but continued discussing their project.

"Could it be that Professor Darkholme is a bit out of touch?" Ron pointed to his head. "We haven't even learned a single spell yet, and he wants us to develop spells? Is he joking?"

"Your brain is the one not working!" Hermione immediately countered. "Professor Murphy's approach is very clear, and he's serious about teaching us. Besides, I've already learned several spells."

"Magic can achieve anything we think of," Harry suddenly said. "Sirius told me that the professor is very powerful and might be the smartest wizard. I believe him."

"Yeah, the professor does seem really strong," Tom added. "Did you notice the lightning when he appeared? I don't think that was an illusion. It seemed like he arrived with the lightning."

"Anyway, I don't like him. My dad says he might be a dark wizard," Ron said.

"That's impossible!" Hermione immediately objected.

"How would you know?"

"Professor Murphy came to pick me up, remember? He's very kind, he can't be a dark wizard!"

"Very kind..." Ron mocked, pretending to gag, "Oh my god, you're not in love with him, are you?"

Hermione's face turned red, "Nonsense! He's a professor! You shouldn't defame him like that!"

"I'm not defaming him. He's not interested in you," Ron retorted sharply.

"..." Hermione, fuming, stood up and moved to sit beside Tom. "I won't sit with this jerk!"

"Alright, let's discuss what topic to choose," Tom said, trying to ease the tension. "Harry, what did you mean by the question you asked during class?"

Harry Potter looked at Tom, "Tom, have you ever seen your parents?"

Tom shook his head, "I was told they died in a car accident shortly after I was born. I don't even remember what they looked like."

"Same here," Harry said somberly. "It was Sirius who showed me their photos so I knew what they looked like."

Tom frowned, "So, you want to resurrect your parents?"

"They were killed by a powerful curse. Sirius said there's no counter-curse, so it's impossible to resurrect them. I just... want to see them."

"Even as ghosts like Nick, I just want to talk to them. Do you think they left ghosts behind?"

"My parents were Muggles; they probably didn't leave ghosts," Tom said. "But if they became ghosts, maybe you should check your old home. The ghosts at Hogwarts have been here for centuries; they don't seem to like moving."

"Sirius won't let me. He says I'm too young to deal with these things."

"Your guardian seems really nice to you," Tom said, somewhat enviously.

"Yeah, Sirius is very kind," Harry nodded emphatically. "What about you, Tom? What's your wish?"

"Me?" Tom hesitated, "I guess it's to remember my past."

"I have a memory issue. I can't remember the past. I want to recover those memories."

"Memory, that's difficult too," Harry said. It all sounded way beyond their comprehension. "Hermione, what about you? What do you want to do with magic?"

"I..." Hermione thought for a while. She didn't have anything specific she wanted to realize.

Compared to Harry and Tom, born in a dentist family with loving parents, she grew up wrapped in love and had no regrets that needed magic to rectify.

But, if she had to choose something, "I want more time! So I can finish reading all the books I want."

Well, true to her Ravenclaw spirit.

Harry and Tom were speechless.

But, resurrection, memory, time... each topic seemed more challenging than the last.

"Ron..."

"Cough, I don't have any wishes..." Ron, knowing it was eventually his turn, pulled out his old wand, "If I have to say, maybe getting a new wand?"

"Pfft..." Hermione laughed, "What kind of wish is that?"

...

Murphy also wanted a new wand.

He had gone through Ollivander's wand-making book several times, thoroughly understanding its contents, and decided to try making a wand.

Wand making involves three parts.

First, making the wand shaft.

Shafts are typically made from wood, cut and polished, sometimes involving oiling, soaking, sun drying, carbonizing, and varnishing, to transform a branch into a ten to fifteen-inch stick.

Then, hollowing out the center from the bottom to place the wand core.

After the shaft is ready, the second step is preparing the core.

Since Ollivander, mainstream wands usually use materials like dragon heartstring, phoenix feather, or unicorn hair for cores. These magical creature parts need to be processed into the right size and length to fit inside the shaft.

The third step involves injecting a special magical glue into the hollowed center, filling it up, and sealing it with a gemstone or wood as the wand base, then letting it rest for a while for the magic to fuse the core and shaft together.

This is a peculiar process. Researchers at the institute found that the core extends filaments throughout the internal space, even into the wood, allowing its magic to permeate the entire shaft, transforming the ordinary wood into a magical material.

After fusion, the core gains some plant-like characteristics, becoming more robust and maintaining some activity for unknown reasons.

According to a researcher, wands are somewhat alive, possibly because of this activity, which gives them a preference for magic, making them more or less compatible with different wizards.

In theory, the more similar the magic, the higher the compatibility.

Murphy faced a problem here. After multiple Animagus transformations, his magical nature had become very strange, different from any known magical creature, making any core theoretically less compatible with him.

This might be why he couldn't find a suitable wand at Ollivander's.

After much thought, Murphy had an idea: what if he used his own body tissue for the wand? Like a strand of hair or a feather?

Werewolf hair can make a wand, and so can thunderbird feathers. As a multi-Animagus, I'm a high-level magical creature, right?

Maybe my hair has strong magical power!
