HALF A HEART

''You're just going to drown deeper.. There's no way out.. The more you try to move, the more you try to swim, the deeper you'll sink.. The most painful thing about sadness is that it knows how to trick you.. It give you time to recover just to attack you even harder.. It tricks you into thinking that it's gone and just when you start to believe it, it comes back like a big wave and drag you back into the deep dark ocean of loneliness..'' That was exactly what Jake was going through.. He thought he will find his happiness if he get a good job, buy a house for his family etc.. But money can't buy happiness.. Things can only give pleasure and pleasure is not happiness.. Happiness is the presence of peace which was no where to be found in Jake's heart.. Half of his heart died the day Abby left.. The remaining died when his own parents stopped calling his name and started treating him like a stranger.. He stopped believing in miracles long ago .. But fate is something unpredictable and unstoppable..

Pinky promise?

Jake always dreamed of having a future with his sunshine.. His Abby.. Having a family with them, even though it was impossible.. He has always been a realistic boy.. Jake was never the kind of person to dream about something he knew was impossible..

Yet the things love makes us do..

..

"Lily.. Abby's daughter" ms. Jane said..

Was it sadness? What was it.. Jake couldn't exactly pinpoint the feeling he was experiencing right now..

It's cruel how some invisible words can hurt more than any weapon out there..

His heart broke once again.. He was used to it at this point..

An unexplainable feeling rushed in once again and for a moment he forgot every when he saw a small baby girl walking out of the room.. He had the same caramel skin as Abby.. Same brown eyes and that small pout on her face.. She looks just like a mini version of Abby..

Lily was holding a teddy bear that was twice her size.. It was natural for her to trip over it..

Ms Jane rushed over to pick her up and comfort her but what a brave little girl she was? She just laughed at herself for tripping over her fluffy friend..

Jake was so mesmerized looking at little Abby, that he almost forgot everything for a while.. His lips were curled into the brightest and most genuine smile, and his eyes He was his 18-year-old self once again for a moment..

Ms Jane picked up lily as she held her teddy's hand tightly in her small fist refusing to let go of her friend..

Ms Jane walked back towards jake and sat next to him..

He watched as the little lily looked up at him with her big bright eyes, confusedly..

"Oh, that's uncle jake.. He's a friend don't worry" ms. Jane told little lily..

He reached out his hand toward the little girl.. Lily looked back at ms. Jane and she nodded in response with a kind smile..

He was shaking hands with the tiny little girl who looks like just a mini version of Abby, was a heart-melting moment for jake.. Her tiny soft hand felt like a kitten's paw again his giant bruised hand..

Lily gave him a big smile and said "I wam wiiilyyyyy!" (I'm lily)

The sudden overwhelming feeling almost made him tear up.. He couldn't understand why he was feeling like that.. Lily wasn't even his child.. But at this moment, he couldn't care less about anything..

He grabbed his bag and took out a strawberry-flavored candy.. He noticed how the sight of candy made the little girl's eyes sparkle with joy..

Looking at a kid in front of him, made him wonder just where did he lose this kind of spark.. It reminded him of when he was young he would go out and celebrate his birthdays with his parents.. As a kid, he always what he desired.. He would get overly excited to watch his favourite cartoon.. How whenever he would come home from school and his mom would hide the TV remote and tell him that she won't give it back until he take a bath.. That will make him hurriedly rush to his room and take a bath just so he could watch his favourite cartoon.. He missed being a kid..

Without him realizing, a tear left his eye as he reminisced the good old days..

He felt a tiny hand grabbing his large hand..

Lily put the candy back in his palm and said "Duwwn be shad you can havv et back'' (Don't be sad you can have it back)

Once again this heart-melting move of lily made him chuckle as he wiped away his tear ..

"I'm fine.. And this .. is yours" he gave her the candy back..

"pwomisee?" (Promise) she said holding out her tiny little pinky finger..

..

"Promise?" Abby held out their pinky finger with a smile brighter than the sun..

Jake couldn't help but laugh out loud at this childish move of Abby..

"What are we? 5?" He said ruffling their hair..

"What do you mean! You don't have to be 5 to make pinky promises! You- you- you stupid oldie!"

Abby turned their back against him crossing their hands against their chest with a small pout..

"Ok ok fine!" He grabs their shoulder gently turning them around..

He grabbed Abby's hand intertwining their pinky finger with his own..

"Promise"

..

He intertwined his pinky fingers with her small one, making a promise..

"Promise"

'Sorry little one .. But I promise.. I'll be fine.. Maybe not yet, but one day.. I'll be fine I promise' he thought..
