Chapter 7. You Didn't Try Hard Enough.

Jay curiously followed Noah into the elevator, "Hey, he didn't say which floor it was on. Oh... This elevator only has the door button?"

Noah pressed the button calmly, "I think someone will operate the elevator and take us to the interview floor."

At this time, K was watching the two in the elevator through the monitoring. Noah seemed very calm, and Edwards was curious about everything.

He investigated the information of the two. Edwards was an NYPD detective who had captured many criminals. He had good marksmanship, good physical strength and a trustworthy character.

Noah's resume didn't seem to be a problem either. His father was an American, while his mother was Chinese. He graduated from a regular university, worked as a clerk, fitness coach, delivery man and many other odd jobs, and later resigned for personal reasons. He shared an apartment with Edwards and had no prior criminal records.

However, he found an interesting thing. Noah's parents died because of an alien incident. Maybe that's when Noah saw the M.I.B. and learned about these things.

"Noah, I think the elevator is moving down...?" Jay looked at Noah. 'Shouldn't it be moving up? What kind of company H.Q. has their people working underground? Was it because this was a tunnelling company?'

"It doesn't matter. Look, it's opening." Noah walked out, and Jay followed.

There were some egg-shaped seats in a room, a total of eight, with only two of which were empty. The two of them walked over and sat down.

Another person was standing in front of them and looking at them, "You two are a little late."

Noah looked at the Rolex on his wrist. He took it from Jeebs's store last night, "We don't seem to be late."

"My name is Zed. You're all here because you're the best of the best. Marines, Air Force, Navy SEALs, Army Rangers, NYPD, um... and unemployed young man. And we're looking for the best of you."

Everyone looked at Noah, among them, except the soldiers, the police. Only Noah's identity was special. How could he receive an invitation at the same time they did?

"Looking for what? I'm not here for an interview. I'm just accompanying my friend." Jay immediately said as he raised his hand.

Noah pulled his hand down, "Listen till he's done. Even if you don't want the job, no one could force you to work later."

Zed looked at Noah. He didn't understand why K, his best agent, recommended two people, especially this totally irrelevant Noah. Could such a person do 'their' job?

"We're looking for one of you. Just one. What will follow is a series of simple tests; Motor skills, concentration, stamina. Do you have any questions?"

Noah's fist slightly trembled. He could only apologise to Jay. He had to be the one to join the M.I.B.

"Hey Noah, are these guys competing for the job too?" Jay leaned closer to Noah and asked in a whisper. "I don't even know why you're here."

'But why are these soldiers applying for a job in the Bridge & Tunnel Authority?'

Zed glanced at Jay, "I see that some of you have questions...? Does anyone know why you're here?"

Someone instantly stood up, "Second Lieutenant Jake Johnson. West Point, graduating with honors. We're here because you're looking for the best, of the best, of the best. Sir! "

After saying that, Jake also looked at Jay and Noah. 'How did these two amateurs get in?'

Jay chuckled, "Your boy Captain America here. He's very excited, but he has no clue why we're here."

All the other interviewers looked at Jay. Jay shrugged, "You guys really don't know how to chill, do you?"

Zed somewhat helplessly looked at the one-way mirror behind him. Behind it was another examiner, K, because this time, K was the one who needed a new partner.

"Well, let's get started."

Everyone began to answer the test questions. Noah also took out some paper and a pencil from the chair behind him. Jay thought it had nothing to do with himself at first, but it was boring anyway. 'Let's see what kind of questions they were giving.'

Suddenly, with one slip, his pencil snapped. He looks around, but no one should have noticed. 'I don't need to pay for that, right?'

"What kind of idiot came up with a test but didn't give anyone a desk? "Jay murmured in a low voice.

But he saw that Noah actually stood up from his seat, put the test questions on the chair, then walked to the middle of the room and pulled the table in front of him.

"Smart move. Scoot over a little. I need to use it too." Jay turned a little and also used the table.

Everyone else looked at the two men in surprise. They were all soldiers, and they were the most disciplined. No one would move a table until an officer would.

'These two should be eliminated later, really undisciplined!'

Behind the glass, the corners of K's lips hooked up. He was very appreciative of Noah's reckless approach. The other soldiers were too disciplined. In doing their job, they had to be flexible.

...

"Hey Noah, why are there so many questions? Are you doing them? I don't understand most of them. But it doesn't matter, anyway. I'm just writing down gibberish. You look like you know your stuff. Most of them don't make any sense. Asking how to look for aliens, and what I would do when I encounter them...?" After Zed retrieved the test questions, Jay leaned in and whispered to Noah.

"Well, if aliens don't affect Earth and abide by the laws here. It wouldn't be a problem; they just need to lay low. If they commit a crime, they have to be arrested. Either deported or eliminated. You are a cop. You should be more familiar with these issues than I am."

"Arresting aliens? Hahahaha, you answered the same as I did. I wrote that no matter what planet they're from if they're a criminal, I would arrest them!"

The other six soldiers looked at the two. 'Shouldn't this kind of problem be reported first, then follow orders from the government? It looks like these two would never follow procedures.'

"Next item, physical fitness test."

Noah stretched his body.

"Don't use these. Let's arm-wrestle. We can see who's stronger that way." Noah didn't touch the test equipment but looked at the soldiers defiantly.

Second Lieutenant Johnson, who was ridiculed by Jay before, was the first to come over. He looked at Noah's figure with a smirk, "You're quite funny."

K frowned in the distance. 'Why did Noah, who didn't look physically outstanding, ask for an arm-wrestling match? His physical strength estimates are the lowest in this batch.'

"Start."

Zed also wanted to eliminate Noah as soon as possible, so he didn't refuse the offer, but the situation didn't seem right. The outstanding graduate from West Point looked annoyed, while Noah looked relaxed.

"So, you're the best of the best? Graduated with honours from West Point? At this level? I will just say this, good luck!"
