42 Making of a leader

"For today onwards, we're in this shit together. As your boss and the leader of the Flying Eagle tribe, I have only two requirements for you. First, every man must obey commands given by Roc who is my second in command and the captain of the hunters. Second, every woman must obey the arrangements made Night and Daisy."

Edward really didn't know what else to say. If he went on speaking, he knew he would probably screw it up so he felt it was better to keep it short and gutsier. It was not like he had any idea as a proper speaker and knowledge on how to appeal a crowd, especially a crowd of barbarians.

"There is nothing else for now. Now we roast the deer and celebrate today! Now we eat as much as we want!"

"Oraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!~" the rest of the people roared in response.

People screamed and laughed together while eating the barbecue meat on a stick. It was a joyous occasion for everyone.

Daisy also came down from the cave. She took a few roasted pheasants and sat around a campfire along with other people to eat delicious meat and enjoy the warmth from the bonfire.

"Daisy you have just barely recovered. You must take extra care of yourself and drink plenty of water. By morning you'll be able to jump around like you always did."

Edward swallowed a piece of the meat. He wrinkled his brows and felt that the meat was not that good. It was missing something.

'Maybe it's just my taste buds are not used to bland meat without spices and herbs?'

Daisy's face returned a charming expression on hearing Edward worrying for her. She sat even closer to Edward and looked at him with deep affection.

"Light, you made the women in the tribe follow me and Night?"

"Well, now that we have more people, we can do a lot of things. Roc and Debro are the captain and deputy captain of the hunting team. Then you and Night will lead the women folk. Whoever does not listen to you or Night will be simply expelled. We have no need for rebellious people among us."

"Then Light what will you do?" Daisy asked while picking up a clay pot and drinking water from it. Edward was slowly making it a norm to use items made from clay for their everyday use. He hoped the people would adopt it quicker even though he understood a base reluctance anyone would have over change.

"Yeah, Light, what will you do?" Night who was sitting nearby also asked but with a slight unease in her heart.

Night was a little uneasy in her heart. She was under the pressure of the oath and she could not be with Edward before she got the teeth of the saber-toothed tiger but she was worried that it would make Light angry or give up and perhaps one day even leave her for someone else.

Rare were women like Night who were saving themselves this stubbornly during such an era.

"Of course I have a lot of things to do. The saber-toothed tiger needs to be killed too. I have to think about it and plan for the eventual battle."

Edward smiled at the two girls while replying to them, a cheeky grin on his face.

'Where is this question coming from? I am preparing to build a kingdom by relying on this tribe to grow and develop. As the head, how can I not have anything to do? There needs a lot of planning and thinking."

Night suddenly breathed a sigh of relief and sipped water from her pot.

"Light! Hot water feels so good to drink in the cold night." This was the first time in her life that she has ever drunk hot water. Night felt excited about this new thing.

At this moment, the old patriarch who drove Edward out, came over as he supported himself with his usual stick. He rubbed his hands against the fur around his waist. His heavily bearded face still held some meat residue while his mouth was busy chewing.

With tears in his eyes, he spoke to Edward:

"Light.. brother… no chief… until today I have never lived life. But today I have truly lived and today I have eaten such delicious things. This tribe… these people…. I am relieved that you can guide them. I was a foolish one."

Edward smiled and patted him on the shoulder, saying that he would no longer care about the past. Edward felt it was understandable how they reacted to him. It was like someone bringing uranium to his home, he too would have kicked out that person.

Uranium can kill people even if it can be used to create power. They too must've feared fire like this.
