Chapter 18 : Safety Measures

William opened the letter from the king and Kain went to read it as well.

My father sighed and nodded before saying, “Yes, it seems like this is for the best. Let me show you the guest room. You may stay there until it’s time.”

I could see that Kain had some objection in mind but he remained silent.

A wave of sadness hit me as well when I realized William’s words, until it’s time, meant until it was time for me to go back to the palace.

Kain’s expression eventually became blank and unreadable. I sighed silently to myself.

“Thank you for understanding,” Rex nodded to my father. “Before I turn in, I would need to walk around the house and check the perimeter to make sure that the proper security measures are implemented.”

“Absolutely,” William agreed and escorted Rex back outside to check around the perimeter first.

Kain remained beside me as they left and then seemed to turn his full attention on me to make sure that I was alright.
