The underground lava lake was too small for a large-scale fight. Perhaps if the Lava Python came out from that small lava lake and fought him in the more spacious parts of the cavern, he might still be able to kite it around with his speed and kill it with the improved dagger.
If he did not rely on the flying dagger and his wing, he would not be able to contend against the Lava Python at all.
The reason the Demonic Beast was so strong was mainly because of its body size. Its physique was huge, allowing it to store more blood and Qi which caused it to be so powerful!
