CHAPTER 9: THE FIRST DAY OF THE REST OF YOUR LIFE.

Mr John cleared his throat, comporting himself to speak, as he was perplexed.

"Uh ma'am, the employee hasn't rounded up his induction. He still has tomorrow, which happens to be the most important day of his induction."

"He seems like a smart guy. He can learn while on the job," Ava responded.

Mr John furrowed his brow, a bit troubled.

"You are smart, aren't you?" Ava asked Kane, looking him straight in the eyes.

"Yes ma'am, I am," Kane replied with composure. He needed to give his new boss a good impression.

"Good! See you tomorrow."

Ava walked gracefully out of the hall, gracefully, and was escorted by her security to her car at the ground floor.

Mr John turned to his team after Ava left. They shrugged pursing their lips, as they had nothing to say.

"Alright then, your induction is over. See you tomorrow," Mr John declared and walked out, heading back to his office.

Kane noticed Mr John seemed somewhat disappointed. And he understood were it all stemmed from. He knew time would help change all that.

Kane quickly got his things together as the inductors waited for him. When he was done, he appreciated them, bowing slightly, and he walked out. He made his way down through the elevator to the ground floor and through the lobby, heading out.

Kane was all smiles as he made his way out. He sighted the receptionist once again, glaring at him, but he couldn't care less about whatever it was that made her hateful towards him.

Outside the lobby, he saw Ava's convoy making it's way out, being driven in a Maybach. He stopped to wait for the vehicle to pass.

Ava looked at him as she drove out, but Kane couldn't see her through the tinted glasses. She chuckled softly, shaking her head, as she got back to scrolling through her iPad.

"So I'm gonna be working for her henceforth huh?" he mumbled softly, chuckling. Then he made his way out of the hotel premises, heading back home.

___________

Stephanie was home with her mom when they heard the doorbell ring. Stephanie ignored the notification and continued reading through a couple of books she had spread out on the dining table.

The doorbell rang again, thrice this time, which was a signature ringing pattern of Kane whenever no one answered the door when he rings the doorbell for the first time.

Melanie knew it was Kane and turned to her daughter.

"Are you getting that or what?"

Stephanie sighed frustratedly, frowning as she grudgingly walked to the door, and opened it. She turned back heading to the dining table without checking to see who it was, as she already knew who it was.

"Good evening mom," Kane greeted delightedly.

"Welcome home honey," Melanie replied. "How did it go?"

Kane sat beside his mother on the three seater couch, and gave out a deep sigh.

"It was tiring, but interesting. The boss ended the induction today, which originally was supposed to last for two days, asking me to resume work tomorrow."

"Oh wow! I guess that's a good thing. Right?" Melanie asked, raising her eyebrows.

"Yeah, it is. But it seemed unusual though," Kane answered.

"All that matters is you got it. Am sure you'll figure out all that you need to know while on the job. My son is a smart young man," Melanie smiled.

"Thanks for always having my back mama," Kane appreciated, smiling back at his mother. He then turned and looked at his younger sister.

"Hey, how are you Steph?" he asked.

"Am okay," she replied nonchalantly, with her eyes fixed in her books.

"Okay," Kane nodded. "Doing homework huh? Need some help?"

"Nope. I'm fully capable of solving trigonometry."

"Okay," Kane nodded, and turned back facing his mother. She chuckled inaudibly, smiling.

"Anyway, I got you something. Wait here," Melanie said, as she quickly hurried to her room and returned with a shopping bag.

"Here you go," she handed the bag to Kane.

"Okay..." Kane's voice trailed as he furrowed his brow, wondering what the content was.

Reaching in, he brought out a new pair of black suit. It caused him to sigh, somewhat frustratedly.

"Mom! You shouldn't have. This must have cost you a lot to acquire," Kane said, unhappily.

"Come on, it was nothing, really. You'd be surprised I got it a lot cheaper than you think."

"Mm-hmm," Kane pursed his lips.

"The suit you have is good, but not befitting the position you now hold at Sky Gate Hotels. I just wanted you to look your very best as you begin. Hmm?" Melanie responded.

"Thank you mama," Kane affectionately hugged his mother.

"I could have just gotten a some new pair of suits by the time I got paid. My paycheck is quite reasonable you know."

"You don't say," Melanie responded, breaking their embrace.

"Mm-hmm. Have a look at this," Kane reached into his bag and handed his mom the compensation plan for his job.

Going through it, Melanie gasped, with her eyes widening. Kane smiled as he saw her reaction.

"Twenty three thousand dollars? Including health insurance for all your dependents, along with travel allowances?"

"Yup!" Kane affirmed elatedly, nodding his head.

Stephanie turned towards the duo, as she was stunned to hear all that.

"This is four times what I earn in a month," Melanie said, being moved to tears. Kane smiled looking at her, and placed his hand on her left shoulder.

"Things are going to get better mom. They are," he said assuringly. His mother nodded, and they smiled at each other.

____________

Kane was at the hotel, bright and early the next morning. Just as he learned during the induction, he waited for Ava, his boss, to arrive. He was to receive her at the entrance and proceed into the hotel with her.

Kane waited for nearly an hour, but Ava hadn't arrived. He shrugged it off, knowing she was the boss, and could come a little later than every other person.

His wait became dauntingly long, as he waited for two extra hours, and yet she hadn't arrived.

"What the hell's taking her so long to come to work?" Kane said frustratedly, pacing to the left.

"What did you say?"

Kane was startled at the sudden voice that spoke behind him. Turning, he saw that it was Mr John. Immediately, his heart began racing.

"I asked you a question. What was it you said?" Mr John repeated.

Kane gulped, not knowing what to say.
